Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Meyers.
Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a dedicated business owner, hearing about other businesses closing always makes me stop and ask, “What can we do to keep it open?” When we learned that our local community theater in Higginsville, Missouri was set to close permanently at the end of June 2023, we knew a vital part of our downtown would be lost.
We saw an opportunity to make a difference — and took it. Although stepping into the entertainment industry was a major shift from running a garden center, we embraced the challenge. We went from raising seeds to blooms and working with dirt under our nails, to creating a space for film, laughter, and community connection.
With incredible support from our community, and the dedication of our family and friends, we’ve proudly kept the theater open for the past two years. It’s been a rewarding journey of growth, learning, and local pride.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a challenging journey — from navigating writer strikes and maintaining a historic 1934 theatre, to handling projector and equipment issues, learning how to work with production studios, and even facing a cease and desist letter. We’ve tackled electrical upgrades to meet insurance requirements, managed periods of low attendance, and continued discovering what our community truly wants from its local theatre.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re especially proud of our local business–sponsored free community showings, our reading incentive program, and our throwback movie events featuring themed food and experiences.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
You can’t be afraid to ask questions—communication is key. We’ve learned the importance of reaching out to other small businesses and theaters like our own to follow trends and understand what they’re experiencing. We’re still learning and refining what works best for us.
