Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Glover.
Hi Matt, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a truck driver by trade. A couple of years ago we started praying for a change that would allow me home more with my wife and kids. My son and I were pouring jig heads in the basement one afternoon, I turned around and saw an airbrush I bought 7 years ago to touch up some duck decoys. I started wondering if I could do something with that on the side. Got in touch with a buddy of mine who knew Don Frank (world champion wood carver and fish taxidermist) who lives not too far from me. After meeting Don he shared some basics and gave me a few old fish to practice on. When I was young, I painted with acrylics on canvas which sparked my interest in art, but never really pursued. Fishing, on the other hand, I’ve pursued passionately my whole life. So painting fish seemed like a good fit. It started just as a side hustle, but caught attention on social. In June 2024 I took the leap of faith and quit trucking and went full time painting. Lures were an unexpected addition, but replicas are my passion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Going from a steady paycheck to unknown income was an adjustment. We’ve learned that painting is just one part of the business. Marketing, ordering, shipping, and inventory are all things we’ve learned along the way. For someone with a business degree, this may come natural. For a trucker, it’s been quite the learning experience. But it’s rewarding doing it for yourself and for your family.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I paint fish replicas. From someone’s trophy catch to a child’s first catch, doesn’t matter. I recreate someone’s memorable moment they can put on display to enjoy for a lifetime. I am meticulous and very attentive to detail. While I have painted “commercial” fish, I specialize in trying to match the customer’s photo to the fish I’m painting.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Don Frank has been an incredible resource of knowledge that I am tremendously thankful for. Josh Roth, Heath Fiala, and Blake Paff have been instrumental in helping me pursue this passion. All of which are phenomenal fish artists.
The Unashamed Podcast, Abundant Life and Church of Eleven22 are what I listen to most when painting. The Bible is my manual for life and business. It truly is a guide with daily application for both.
