Life & Work with Alisha Galvan of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Galvan.

Hi Alisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a book nerd; I’m not ashamed to admit it. Journaling and writing down my thoughts are always therapeutic. Reading has become a devotion for me ever since I learned how to read. Combining real-life horrors with fiction has been my passion since I read my first Goosebumps book in the third grade. Growing up, I experienced a lot of trauma; writing horror became a great outlet for that pain.
My first published project was a poem I wrote when I was ten. Now, twenty-six years later, I have five published books with more on the way! Sometimes we tarnish ourselves with what we have survived or witnessed, but I’ve chosen to turn that pain into art I hope others can resonate with or understand from a different lens.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh gosh no! Writing and creating art are tough businesses. As a writer, I draw heavily on my real-life experiences in my fiction. Some people won’t vibe with it, some will. You need to have tough skin because not everyone will enjoy the books I write, and that’s okay. Maybe one book of mine isn’t something you enjoy, but perhaps another one will be.
Finding readers to take a chance on my books is the real struggle. Marketing! Ugh!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I write mainly horror and thrillers, but enjoy genre-bending with romance, supernatural, suspense, sci-fi, and a good twist ending you probably won’t see coming. I tend to write stories that might make you cry, get angry, scared, and emotional. You never know what to expect from my books.
What am I known for—my books will make you feel something. Even my short story collection, A Path Through the Forest, will have readers thinking. And as an author, writing short stories to evoke emotion is hard to do.
It’s hard to pinpoint what my proudest achievement is at this point in my career. I love all my word babies and am proud to be a published author. Yet, as an introvert, the author’s events/signings I have experienced I never knew I would enjoy. Connecting with readers who are interested in my books, fellow authors, and the whole bookish community is something I’ve come to really enjoy.
As for books I’ve released, I am most proud of Bitter Crown of Thistle and Autumn! Bitter Crown of Thistle for being my debut novel and writing about horrors known, horrors survived. Autumn is one of the hardest, poetic books I’ve ever written. I’ve cried while writing books, yet I cried my hardest while writing this one.
What sets me apart from other authors is that I am not afraid to shy away from graphic body horror and psychological trauma—mixing beauty with darkness to create an unforgettable experience for my readers.

What’s next?
Plans for the future?! I am currently finishing a first draft of a new novel. I have another book that needs editing, which will be my next release. So, two horror books are planned for release in 2026. I will also be attending the Scares that Care Horror Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the end of February 2026. Scares that Care is a fantastic charity, and I am proud to be part of it!
