Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Hasselquist.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always known that my path would lead to owning my own dance studio. Six years ago, I sat at a meeting with my best friend, dreaming of what life would be like if we started our dream studio. The next day, we were looking at spaces and wrapping up loose ends from our current place of employment. It’s always felt right.
We broke ground on our studio space in February of 2020 and the world completely shut down. We continued to move forward with construction on a dream and a prayer. Due to severe delays, we opening in the summer of 2021 at a local community center.
We officially launched in our own space in August of 2021.
We’ve grown year after year and with a very successful program, we continue to push the boundaries and provide incredible dance eduction.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any dance studio owner would ever say it’s a “smooth road.”
I’ve had to learn some very tough lessons – I’ve lost people I have considered to be close friends, I’ve had to have very tough conversations with young people that I cared about, someone is ALWAYS mad at you…
The biggest obstacle we’ve faced is growth. It sounds silly but growing be pains are real. I strive to try and be one step ahead of every scenario but, the growth magnifies that I need to be better about delegating and trusting that my team is able to handle whatever the business throws at them.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
“Be curious. Not judgmental.” -Ted Lasso
I’ve learned so much from my colleagues across a lot of different industries.
The dance world can be so small. Too small. When we pigeon hole ourselves and our businesses to only what we know/the familiar, we don’t foster an environment of growth.
For example: I’ve worked for studios who only hire alumni as teachers. Which sounds great – in theory. But, how does that challenge students to learn from different backgrounds, different teaching philosophies? It only encourages stagnant growth.
I push my teachers to experience as much as possible. They bring a wealth of knowledge to our students so we can support them in whatever they choose to pursue past our doors.
Beyond that, I pride myself in being collaborative with other studios. I have a great working relationship with many local dance studio owners and teachers.
