Conversations with Georgina Montoya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgina Montoya.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

About GinaTakesDetroit

I started GinaTakesDetroit back in 2018, when I began taking photos of Detroit and capturing moments from my everyday life. That’s when I realized how much I truly enjoy photography.

I wanted to share my photos and give people a glimpse into the city I live in—its streets, its growth, and its unique energy. As a Mexican girl growing up in Detroit, I wanted to share my perspective and show a different side of the city—one that often goes unseen.

Through this blog, I aim to highlight Detroit’s development, its culture, and the everyday experiences that make it such a special place. From local restaurants and scenic walks to trips up north and the city’s vibrant community, I want people to see that Detroit is a great place to live, explore, and fall in love with.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are so many talented photographers and creators out there who also share their own vision of Detroit. It’s challenging to stay unique and put my photos out there in a way that people can recognize my style — where someone can see a picture and know it’s mine.

That’s probably the hardest part, standing out while staying true to myself. But what makes GinaTakesDetroit a little different is the community I share it with — people who see Detroit through my eyes, from my background, my culture, and my everyday experiences growing up here.

Another part of this journey is learning about social media strategies — getting to know your audience, understanding what they like, and seeing how they interact with your content. Being active on social media can honestly feel like a full-time job, and sometimes it’s hard to balance it with everything else I do in my daily life.

That’s one of the biggest challenges: staying consistent, creating content, and keeping your page active. It takes a lot of time and dedication, but it’s all part of sharing what I love and connecting with people who appreciate it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Gina Takes Detroit is all about lifestyle, Detroit culture, and photography — it’s the story of a Mexican girl living and growing up in this city, capturing it through her own eyes.

I’ve always loved creating, taking photos, and expressing myself in different ways. Creativity runs in my family — my mom is a singer and is in an English/Spanish rock band, and my brother is a well-known artist here in Detroit, an illustrator and muralist. I come from a family full of artists, and being surrounded by so much talent constantly inspires me to keep creating and sharing my own vision.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love listening to the Good Life Project podcast — it’s so inspiring and always gives me a positive perspective on life and creativity. I also follow a lot of inspiring content creators and entrepreneurs on Instagram who are a good motivation .
