Conversations with Marie Schulte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Schulte.

Hi Marie , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey starts all the way back when I was a little girl and my best friend’s mother had taken us to Children’s Palace. Dawn asked what toy we wanted. I wanted a book—it was called The Kids’ Book of Questions. I was very curious and wanted answers to all my questions. I loved asking other people questions to gain information about things and people that I did not know. As I grew, I loved taking surveys, quizzes, and personality tests to develop greater insight into myself and others. I had a lot of curiosity about family dynamics, our minds, and how to feel better when we weren’t feeling well.
Over the years, I developed and learned a lot of skills, and eventually, I became a Life Coach. My best friend Elisha said, “Marie, you’ve always been a Life Coach—you’ve been asking so many questions, and this is totally you!” I had no idea, but that validation from her meant a lot. I really enjoyed that work. After completing the life coaching program, I decided to go back to school and earn my master’s, where I became a Licensed Professional Counselor. Then I went on and took another test to earn my clinical license.
I’ve always wanted to go all the way, so when my daughter entered her freshman year of college, I was able to begin my own freshman year of my PhD program, which I’m currently studying—and I absolutely love it. I’m a lifelong learner. I love to read, I love to study, and I love to help people. That’s where I feel most useful—because if I can help others and be of service, then I feel purposeful.
I was more of a shy kid when I was younger, so studying psychology and sociology really helped me come out of my shell. My undergraduate degree is in sociology, so I naturally take a world perspective and apply it to the individual. In my sessions, that helps me create the best possible treatment plan for my clients. I love providing psychoeducation and truly enjoy what I get to do every single day. Seeing people become well and feel better brings me so much joy.
I also feel that this is the work I am meant to do. It’s one of the gifts the Lord gave me—to be here for others and to serve. I view my practice as service to our Lord.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it was not a smooth ride. I don’t believe anybody’s is after the life coaching program. I had to sacrifice and sell my big beautiful home and downsize so I could go back to school and earn my masters degree in order to become a therapist. I also had to give away 1500 free hours for clinicals after four years of wrapping around the sacrifices I would have to make in order to live my dream I finally went. And then once I went, I was always wishing I would’ve gone sooner however for whatever I didn’t have the guidance to say go ahead. Go back to school now nobody was putting that in my mind however, for myself, I had to go and do it. I also had to go back and earn a masters degree while I was a single mother, raising my daughter, and I believe that the reason when you go to graduate school part of the reasons, it’s not that some of the classes are so hard it’s that you’re going to school with a mortgage and a car payment and putting your child through school and settling your life down while raising your children and being back into school there’s just more obstacles in the family life dynamic regard. I also had to sit down and define I was always searching because before this business I had two other businesses I was I’ve always been a therapist at heart so I started off in massage therapy and went to massage therapy school while I was in college to earn a better living loved being a therapist and then I had to always come up with a business plan of how I could fully invest and to grow the business because I never wanted to grow my massage therapy practice. I was a successful individual provider and then I bridged over and I did life coaching, but in order to reach a larger clientele I knew I was gonna have to go back to school earn my masters degree my clinical license so that I could work with a larger population of people who would have insurance to help cover the cost. And I had to make sure that this was gonna be the right career and that I had to pay and put myself through which I was able to do because I had been a good saver and now I had to then take more leaps of when I went from a solo practice to then leaping out and getting my own office to hire another therapist to being paneled with insurance companies, and there were a lot of different obstacles because there are so many regulations and getting licensed and getting established and the tax license there’s just so many frustrations along the way and being a poor student as an adult that was difficult, but I love what I do and I’m so grateful that I’m on the path and I feel so blessed to be able to be a woman in America who gets to go to school and working on my PhD where in some other countries women cannot.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a clinically, licensed professional counselor, and I specialize in people with personality disorders. I also specialize in people having sexual problems in their life, and I help people who have suffered with trauma help to heal from their trauma to become whole heal and to get out of the suffering of life and to be able to live in life and joyful, and feel alive and balanced stable and happy again what sets me apart from others is my tenacity my work ethic I’m not afraid to work. I take calculate at risk. I’ve always been a dreamer and I’ve always believed in my dreams when I was younger I set some goals for myself and I’ve been able to achieve most of my goals. I still have some things that I don’t want to, but I don’t let anything stop me and I don’t let anyone stop. Me and I constantly am working on pruning myself to become the best version of myself because the healthier and I work live breathe and my work I’m always trying get answers to my questions and I’ve just not let anything get in the way and things off courses come in the way, but I just am determined because I so badly want to be proud of myself. I want my parents to be proud of me. I want to have friends. I want to have relationships and I want people, of course to like me because I need others to survive. I’ve always wanted to be liked and accepted. We all do and so I’ve been working on myself to be a better personality in a better person for not only myself, but for other people because life can be really, really fun when you are able to do the things that you enjoy and I live for adventure and I will do whatever it takes in order to pay for some of those expensive or those different things. What I’m most proud of is my daughter but then business wise I’m almost proud of being able to do some of the things my mentors were able to do
