Today we’d like to introduce you to Eve McGee.
Hi Eve, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a Kansas City, Missouri, native, I am passionate about enhancing people’s lives in and around the McGee KC Consulting community. As a social worker, my most rewarding work has been with non-profit social service organizations. I directed two comprehensive homeless programs serving Kansas City, Missouri. I witnessed the significant positive impact of non-profit organizations on unhoused clients experiencing poverty and food insecurity.
I also witnessed the atrocities that a lack of resources had on the homeless programs’ ability to maximize their impact. Such organizations work hard to accomplish a ‘world of good’ in their community, including serving children and youth and addressing mental health needs. Conversely, these organizations rely heavily on grant funding to sustain their mission and programs. However, they have limited resources to write/manage grants and compete with national non-profits. Promising local programs are often left unimplemented due to a lack of human resources to pursue grant opportunities.
I completed my Ph.D. in social work to expand my knowledge and skills and give back to my community by supporting social service non-profits in their quest to promote community well-being. I wanted to help social service non-profit organizations that work to reduce homelessness, expand mental health services, address social determinants of health, increase access to healthcare, and focus on access to care.
Reflecting on my work experience and education, I realized I could make the most significant impact by leveraging my research, writing, and grant management skills to support these organizations. By leveraging my strengths, I can assist social service non-profits in securing and managing grants, enabling them to focus on their missions and launch innovative programs that enrich the lives of individuals and families in need.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say ‘smooth,’ but I would call it a road of incredible purpose. Every experience, even the challenging ones, provided clarity.
While directing homeless programs here in KC, I was constantly inspired by the frontline work of local social service non-profits. I witnessed their remarkable ability to connect with people, build trust, and help individuals navigate poverty, food insecurity, and mental health crises. Their passion and effectiveness are a powerful force in our community.
At the same time, I saw the clear gap between their immense potential and their resources. I watched these brilliant, dedicated teams doing vital work, but I also recognized how much more they could achieve with the right support.
The primary bottleneck wasn’t a lack of vision or community need; it was the lack of specialized capacity to pursue and manage the grants necessary to fuel and expand their missions. Time and again, I’ve seen innovative local programs and ideas that could truly elevate our community sitting on the shelf. The potential was right there, just waiting to be unlocked.
That realization wasn’t a point of frustration; it was a powerful call to action. It gave me a clear purpose. I pursued my Ph.D. and launched this consultancy to be that bridge. I knew my greatest impact would come from dedicating my skills to helping these essential social service non-profit organizations secure the resources they need to fully realize their missions and continue their positive impact in KC.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about McGee KC Consulting?
At its heart, McGee KC Consulting strategically partners with local social service non-profits in Kansas and Missouri. Our core message is: Stop scrambling. Start building.
We help social service non-profit leaders build a consistent, reliable grant revenue strategy, often without the expense of hiring full-time development staff. We specialize in working with organizations on the front lines of our community’s most complex challenges, including:
Housing instability
Reentry services
Domestic violence
Youth development and mentoring
Mental and behavioral health
Food insecurity
We are known for ending the “last-minute scramble.” Many social service non-profits are forced to chase deadlines and operate reactively. We change that. We don’t just write grants; we build a proactive infrastructure for long-term grant success.
Our perspective sets us apart: I am a social worker first. I bring over 30 years of non-profit leadership and frontline social work experience to this work. I’m not just a consultant; I am a practitioner. I have been on the front lines and understand what it takes to deliver the services I now help fund. I apply a trauma-informed, equity-centered approach to my consulting. Our clients gain more than a writer; they gain a trusted partner who understands their mission and helps them build lasting, strategic relationships with funders.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we built capacity and confidence. Our brand is about alignment; we ensure the funding strategy serves the organization’s mission, not the other way around. Our greatest success is seeing an Executive Director move from burnout to clarity, equipped with a proactive grant calendar, a steady pipeline of aligned funders, and a repeatable growth strategy. We free them to focus on their programs, not just the paperwork.
I want your readers, especially those leading local social service non-profits, to know: You don’t have to do this alone. McGee KC Consulting provides a full-service grant development system. This isn’t one-off grant writing; it’s a partnership. Our clients receive monthly strategy sessions, tailored grant submissions, customized prospect research, and support with funder communication. You get a system, a strategy, and a true partner dedicated to sustaining and growing your mission.
What makes you happy?
That’s an easy one. Seeing my clients win.
It’s not just about the money or getting a grant awarded, though that’s always great. Real happiness, for me, is watching an Executive Director move from burnout to confidence and clarity.
So much of social service non-profit leadership is spent on a reactive “scramble,” just trying to keep the lights on. It’s stressful, and it burns out good people.
What makes me happy is seeing that shift. It’s the call where a client tells me they can finally focus on their programs instead of the paperwork. It’s seeing them launch a new youth mentoring program or expand their shelter beds because we built a sustainable strategy together.
That’s why I do this. Seeing them succeed, knowing they have a clear, proactive plan to grow their mission, that’s what brings me the most joy. It means the system is working and that more lives are being changed here in KC.
