Exploring Life & Business with Nia Givens of NIASGOTCURLS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Givens.

nia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
How I Got Started in the Hair Industry”
My journey in the beauty industry actually started long before hair. I became a licensed nail tech back in 2016. I’ve always loved helping people feel beautiful and confident, but after COVID, I realized I wanted to shift my focus. Hair had always been something I was passionate about, so I decided to go back to school and earn my cosmetology license, which I completed in 2022.
Like many new stylists, I learned a lot along the way, not just about technique but about professionalism, business, and self-discipline. Working as an employee first really shaped me. It showed me the kind of experience I wanted to create for my clients and how I wanted to run my own business, from client care to managing finances and taxes. Those lessons built the foundation for the stylist and business owner I am today.
When I first graduated, I was all about extensions. I wanted to be that sew-in stylist. But then I met one of my mentors, @HairByTreasy, who completely shifted my perspective. She taught me that being a great stylist means being versatile, knowing how to care for natural hair, do extensions, and master haircuts. That lesson changed how I approached my craft and made me fall in love with the idea of versatility, helping clients embrace their hair in every form, whether it’s natural, curly, or styled.
Later on, my experience at the last salon I worked in helped me realize it was time to take the next step and start building something for myself. It was definitely scary at first, but when you’re at a pivotal point in your career, sometimes you just have to bet on yourself. And that leap ended up being the best move I’ve made.
Today, I’m based in Independence, MO, working out of my own private suite, and business has been amazing. I’m so grateful for my clients who followed and continue to support me; that means everything. I truly love what I do and the services I offer.
A lot of people confuse natural hair stylists with curly hair stylists. I work with natural textures, but I don’t specialize in every natural style. My top services are extensions, Curl CPR (a custom treatment that restores moisture and definition to dry curls), and curly cuts. I’ll do a few mini twists here and there, but my main focus is on healthy hair and helping clients feel confident in whatever style they choose.
Looking ahead, my goal is to continue growing my brand and building a space where clients feel comfortable, seen, and cared for. I want my suite to represent more than just great hair. I want it to feel like a lux self-care experience .A place where clients can relax, unwind, and leave feeling restored. Eventually, I see myself expanding, creating content that inspires people to take better care of their hair and themselves. Every part of my journey, from the lessons to the risks, has led me here, and I’m just getting started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started, I had to learn how to juggle everything ! Working long hours, trying to build a clientele, managing finances, and still keeping up with my personal life. It wasn’t easy. There were times when I questioned if I was doing the right thing or moving fast enough.
Another big challenge was understanding the business side of the beauty industry. You don’t always learn about marketing, and managing expenses in school, but those things matter just as much as the creative part. I had to teach myself how to operate like a true business owner, not just a stylist behind the chair.
Leaving a salon environment to go independent was also a huge leap. It was scary not knowing if clients would follow or if I’d be able to sustain myself on my own. But it ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. KCMO got me booked and busy, and every challenge taught me something about perseverance, patience, and trusting my vision.

And I’ve learned that just because someone else doesn’t see your vision doesn’t mean it can’t come to fruition. You have to believe in yourself enough to keep going, even when others don’t understand the bigger picture!

As you know, we’re big fans of NIASGOTCURLS. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Im a Textured Hair Professional .I specialize in textured hair and focus on educating my clients about their hair. I help them understand their hair type, develop routines, and guide them through their hair journey so they can maintain healthy, beautiful hair.
I want to be known for creating confidence through healthy hair, providing expert guidance, and offering a luxury, personalized experience that makes every client feel cared for and empowered.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that you have to keep moving and trust yourself, even when things feel uncertain. When you reach a pivotal point in your career or in life, don’t be afraid to pivot taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone is where growth happens.
