Today we’d like to introduce you to Kali Keilbey.
Hi Kali, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started in the mental health field after college as a case manager, helping adults with severe mental illness. I quickly realized that helping others was something that I enjoyed in a career, but I found that I wanted more. I decided to go back to get my Master’s so that I could help at a deeper level. I graduated with a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and worked my first few years running an outpatient day program for adolescents at a psychiatric hospital. I loved this experience and learned so much in those few years. I went on to work in a private practice in Lee’s Summit, MO, working with primarily adolescents suffering from Depression and Anxiety. I worked in Lee’s Summit for 8 years and last year decided that I wanted to work closer to home. I love being involved in my kids’ school and wanted to have a better work-life balance. I started my own practice of Keilbey Counseling last year. I love working 5 minutes from home and being my own boss. I see adolescents ages 10+ and adults. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as EMDR, trauma therapy. I enjoy helping my clients find joy again as well as healing from past experiences.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After graduating, I found myself unsure about what I wanted to do “when I grew up.” Shortly after, I traveled to Africa to teach English, and that experience became a turning point in my life. It opened my eyes to the impact of helping others and deeply humbled me. From that point on, I knew I wanted to pursue a career centered around making a difference in people’s lives.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have received extensive training in several evidence-based therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), when clinically appropriate. My practice focuses on working with adolescents aged 10 and older, as well as adults. I have a particular interest in supporting adolescents and their families to enhance communication, strengthen relationships, and promote overall emotional well-being.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk I have taken is starting my own business. I left a practice that I enjoyed working at and had been there for many years. I knew that I wanted more; I wanted a better work-life balance and to be closer to my home, my kids, and family. It was a difficult decision, but I wish I had done it sooner. I love being able to be a Therapist, Mom, and volunteer all in the same day.
