Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Colyer.
Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been an athlete my entire life, always striving to improve and compete at the highest level. When I entered college, I realized my focus needed to shift from competing in organized sports to challenging myself — becoming better than I was yesterday. That’s when I discovered my passion for lifting weights and personal growth through strength training.
While in college, I landed my first fitness position as a strength coach for a club swim team. After graduation, I continued to grow my career in the fitness industry by working as a personal trainer in large commercial gyms. Those experiences laid the foundation for my understanding of both fitness and client relationships.
Eventually, my journey led me to a boutique fitness studio where, for over five years, I found what I thought was the perfect job. Yet, in the back of my mind, I always dreamed of owning a gym of my own — a place where I could create an environment built on community, accountability, and real progress.
One day, I made the life-changing decision to leave that “perfect” job and pursue a better life for my wife and son. I converted my basement into a personal training studio and began building my business from the ground up. For the past two years, I’ve had the honor of being my own boss, training clients, and watching that dream take shape.
The journey hasn’t been easy — it’s tested every part of me and every relationship I have. But I know the challenges are worth it. The outcome will be a stronger family, a stronger business, and a stronger version of myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Daily I ask “Did I make the right decision?” “Will I lose everything?” There are days that my schedule is super full, other days, my schedule may have only 3 clients. I have clients that will drop off my schedule without much reason or heistation. I question if I will have enough to pay all my bills at the end of the month. And somehow, I have not missed a bill.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BaseFit Athletics?
I am the owner of BaseFit Athletics, a strength training studio. What makes BaseFit Athletics different is I welcome you into my house to help assist you with your fitness goals. With it a max of 3 clients I can see per hour, there is a very personal feel with each session. There is no mirrors so you can not focus on the parts of your body you hate looking at. You decide on the music we listen to. It is a fun atmosphere where we can help you achieve your fitness goals while discovering how strong you are mentally.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
BaseFit Athletics app is a project Im very proud on. Take your fitness with you regardless the gym you are at. The Power of One More by Ed Mylett is a great book, and the Ed Mylett Show podcast is equally as great. Both of these help give me the belief that I can build a great business.
