Daily Inspiration: Meet Katrina Batcheller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Batcheller.

Hi Katrina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are the 2nd owners of Sugar and Spice Catering (“SSC”). Larry and Diane Roberts were the original owners who started the business in 1972. Our daughter, Rebecca, began working for them approximately 15 years ago. She absolutely fell in love with the business and the whole process. She was just working with them on a part time basis as she was a graphic design artist as her full-time job. Larry and Diane were going to close the doors and retire. Rebecca asked if she could purchase the business. Larry said she was the only one he would consider selling the business to, but she was a graphic design artist. She said she would quit her job. So, she called me one day and said she was going to quit her job. I was very angry with her, but I eventually realized she was happier. Mike, Rebecca and I became partners and owners of SSC in February 2017.

Rebecca is our managing partner. She works very hard every day to keep everything going in the right direction.

Mike still work our “real” jobs as we consider SSC our fun and happy place to work. I was able to retire and come to SSC to help Rebecca with the day-to-day operation.

During the pandemic, we reinvented ourselves in order to make ends meet. All of our weddings and large events postponed, therefore we had to figure out what we were going to do. We eventually began selling our desserts, raw cookie dough and meals in individual or family portions. People were totally amazing with making sure we stayed in business because we have a great following and reputation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Rebecca was a graphic design artist prior to buying SSC.

Mike is the Manager of an IT department.

Katrina was in the legal field for most of her career.

What does success mean to you?
Of course, we want to always have enough money to pay our bills, staff and keep the doors open, but we define success mostly by the great reviews we receive from the couples , individuals and companies we cater for. We find it very rewarding to be a part of these events.
