Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Finocchario.
Hi Luke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Kansas City, the youngest of six children. I attended Bishop Miege and then Benedictine College, where I also played college baseball. After graduating with degrees in International Business, Communications, and Spanish, I taught business English in Singapore at the East Asia School of Business. Following that, I volunteered in Guatemala to further improve my Spanish skills.
I then moved to Washington, D.C., and began working with an estate planning law firm. I earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at George Mason University and was a founding member of an international nonprofit focused on sports and community development in South American countries. During graduate school, I met my wife at George Mason, and we decided to move back to Kansas City to start our family.
We found a house in a wonderful neighborhood between the Plaza and Brookside and welcomed our first dog. I attended law school at UMKC, and my daughter was born during my first semester, prompting me to leave Professor Berger’s Criminal Law class. Throughout law school, I continued to work remotely for the estate planning firm in D.C. while also navigating fatherhood—it was a very busy but rewarding period. After completing law school and passing the Bar Exam, I decided to open my own estate planning law practice, building on over 15 years of experience I had in the field.
My practice has experienced consistent growth each year, and I recently opened a permanent office in Overland Park and a satellite office in North Kansas City.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
After passing the Bar Exam, Covid hit. I was questioning if I should start my own practice or not. I was grateful for my remote position where I could continue to grow in the field, but not be forced to dive into a turbulent environment as a first time entrepreneur.
Once I did launch, it was humbling to understand how difficult it can be to get new clients and grow the practice. I tried some marketing techniques that I learned from the larger law firm in DC, but soon realized that I would have to take my own path and make adjustments to what I thought would be the clear route to success.
Growth is slow…but steady. I have learned to be patient and continue to move forward and try to be adaptive.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own and operate an Estate Planning Law Practice—helping families and individuals make decisions about the inevitable transitions that we will all go through. Spending time to listen and create an Estate Plan that efficiently and thoughtfully address the unique issues that face that particular family. We want to look ahead and examine the horizon and try to identify any potential problems—and we plan against them.
The goal is to make things go as efficient, as cost effective, avoiding potential family friction, taking difficult decisions off the shoulders of grieving loved ones. Estate Planning is something that we all know we need to do, but it is never easy to decide that today is a good day to address it. My goal is to make the process as easy, painless and efficient as possible.
Listening is the most important trait that a good Estate Planner can have. I am proud of the personal attention and connection that I give to my clients, and my intention is to treat them as family and friends.
Any big plans?
I would like to continue to grow the practice, perhaps hire another couple of attorneys down the road and expand our services in different parts of KS and MO.
