Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Kingsbury.
Hi Julie , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was a child I loved drawing and painting. I always dreamed of having a career where I could use my artistic talents. When I was 15 in High School I took a jewelry making class and loved it!
I decided to pursue it in college and got a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from KU. I started selling my work at Arts and Crafts shows in 1987 and I was hooked! I was so happy that I could make jewelry and sell it and be my own boss, that I started participating in 20 shows a year.
About 20 years ago I decided to open my own small jewelry shop in Downtown Lawrence. Jewelry by Julie is at 17 W 9th St., between Weavers and Wheatfields. I still do a few Art Shows, such as Art in the Park and the Maple Leaf Festival.
I would encourage people to pursue their dreams and do what they enjoy. Owning a business is a lot of hard work, but can be very rewarding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t have any employees, so I don’t have much time off. I run my store and still do a few Art Fairs. I have to make jewelry on my days off, so they are not really days off, but I can do it in my studio at home.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work mostly in Sterling Silver with some copper and bronze. I find unique gemstones that speak to me and fabricate settings from Silver sheet and wire. Many of my designs are inspired by nature.
I’m proud that I’ve been able to stay in business since 1987.
What matters most to you? Why?
I enjoy being self employed and I love the fact that I have repeat customers and I have become friends with many of my longtime customers.
