Rising Stars: Meet Darryl May Jr of Blue Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl May Jr.

Darryl , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story started with sports — I’ve been active for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I played just about everything: basketball, football, track and field, even bowling. In high school, athletics was a huge part of my life, and that carried over into college, where I ran track for four years at the University of Central Missouri.
I’ve been around athletics my entire life, and I’ve always enjoyed working out, competing, and helping others do the same. Opening a sports performance gym was a natural step — it gave me a way to give back to the next generation and share what I’ve learned through years of experience and my training certifications.
What I love most is that it doesn’t feel like work. Watching kids grow stronger, faster, and more confident—both in sports and in life—is incredibly rewarding. Beyond athletics, I take pride in seeing them mature into young men and women, developing discipline, character, and self-belief along the way.
Fitness and training aren’t just my job—they’re my passion. Helping others reach their potential brings me joy every single day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d be lying if I said it’s all been easy. As a business owner, you quickly realize that you wear every hat in the company. I’m the HR manager, the marketing team, the trainer, the owner, the janitor, and everything in between. Every single responsibility falls on me — from running sessions to managing schedules, posting on social media, and making sure the facility stays clean and welcoming.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance all those roles and manage my time effectively. It’s about figuring out how much energy to give each part of the business without letting anything slip through the cracks. Over time, I’ve learned to stay organized, plan ahead, and find a rhythm that keeps everything running smoothly — but it definitely took some trial and error to get there.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Day-to-day, I run a sports performance company where I specialize in speed and agility training — with a strong focus on jumping. As a former college jumper, sprinting and explosive movement have always come naturally to me, and now I use that experience to help athletes reach their full potential.

My main goal is to help kids run faster, jump higher, get stronger and move more efficiently. Over the years, I’ve trained athletes who have gone on to compete in college and even at the professional level — from volleyball and basketball players to track and field athletes. I’ve built a reputation for helping athletes jump higher and farther than they ever thought possible.

One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing the transformation in kids who might not have believed in themselves at first. Sometimes parents come in thinking their child isn’t very coordinated, and after training with me, that same kid is box jumping 44 inches. Moments like that remind me why I love what I do.

What sets me apart from other trainers is the personal approach I take with every athlete. There’s nothing “cookie cutter” about my programs — each workout is built specifically around the individual athlete’s needs, strengths, and weaknesses. That level of customization helps athletes develop faster and more efficiently than generic programs ever could.

When you train with me, you train with me. I don’t hand you off to another coach or assistant. Every athlete I work with — from fifth graders to professionals — gets my full attention and my best effort. I give 100% of myself to every session, and in return, I get 100% effort from every athlete I train. That’s the standard I live by.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always that goofy, silly, athletic kid who couldn’t sit still. I’ve been overly competitive for as long as I can remember — you cant tell me I’m not better then you in anything because, I’m definitely going to try win everything I do . I just love a good challenge.

Personality-wise, I’m easygoing and love to laugh. Anyone who knows me will tell you that you can usually hear me before you see me — my laugh gives me away every time. I’m upbeat, down-to-earth, and I like to keep things fun, whether I’m in the gym, with my family, or just hanging out.

Outside of training, I enjoy spending time with my kids, family, and friends. I like to relax by watching sports, playing video games, or binge-watching Netflix and Hulu shows. I’m a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, and when it comes to basketball — LeBron is the best player in the world, second only to Michael Jordan (in my book, anyway).

I’m old-school when it comes to music — give me classic R&B and rap any day over most of the newer stuff. At the end of the day, I’m just a regular guy who loves life, loves to laugh, and loves helping others reach their goals.
