Today we’d like to introduce you to Roderick Jackson.
Hi Roderick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my culinary journey over three decades ago, rooted in the simple joys of Southern country life. My love for food and family was nurtured by my grandmother, Mae Francis Countryman—affectionately known as Madear. Growing up a country boy in the rural South, I learned early on that food has the power to bring people together and tell a story.
As a military dependent, I was exposed to a rich tapestry of cultures and cuisines that broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for global flavors. At eighteen, I stepped into a professional kitchen for the first time—and the floodgates of creativity opened. Cooking became more than a skill; it became my art form—a way to honor tradition, celebrate culture, and share joy through the universal language of food.
In December 2023, I faced a major medical scare that made me pause and reflect on my life—what I had accomplished and what dreams still remained. One of those dreams was to bring the intimacy and artistry of fine dining into people’s homes. From that moment of clarity, The Artisan Chefs was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building my personal chef business has been a journey filled with lessons, growth, and self-discovery. The biggest challenge I faced wasn’t competition or logistics—it was myself. I’ve always been a quiet person, someone who preferred to let my craft speak for me. For a long time, I struggled with the idea of small talk and the pressure to constantly promote myself.
But one day, I decided to shift that fear into something familiar. Instead of trying to talk about everything, I’d just talk about what I knew and loved—food. That simple shift changed everything. Conversations became easier, connections more natural, and clients could feel the genuine passion behind every dish I prepared.
Like many in this industry, I also faced the challenge of standing out among other personal chefs in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. I discovered my niche by blending Southern charm with luxury service—a style my clients often describe as “Casual to Luxury.” It’s an experience that feels welcoming yet elevated, where comfort meets class.
Building a client base and earning trust through word-of-mouth took time, patience, and consistency. But each meal, each event, and each smile reminded me why I chose this path—to bring people together through food, just like my grandmother taught me.
