Inspiring Conversations with David McKinney of In The Backwoods Consulting LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to David McKinney.

Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a young boy I have always liked running around the backwoods of our family farm, hunting, fishing, and exploring. As I grew older I drifted away from the farm. I joined the Army in 1991 and retired in 2009. My love of the outdoors and conservation has brought me to where I am today. I got my degree in wildlife ecology, forestry management and soil science and decided to pursue my passion as a consultant. I help landowners with wildlife habitat and land management plans. Whether your looking to improve your habitat for hunting purposes or just want to see wildflowers and critters running around your property, we’re here to help. I’ve been designing plans for myself, family and friends for about 20 years and professionally as a consultant for about 3 years. By taking an active role in habitat improvement, the landowner can help preserve their property for generations to come. Our motto is: Helping Improve Wildlife Habitat One Acre At A Time!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There’s always some struggles with starting your own business. From trying to get the word out there about your business, designing a website and advertising, etc. It’s been slow but I’m not giving up.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a wildlife ecologist specializing in wildlife habitat conservation and land management. I offer site specific consultations to assist landowners to better improve their property for hunting or for the enjoyment of just seeing more wildlife. We use CIS mapping along with boots on the ground to come up with a plan that meets the landowner’s objectives. I have a degree in wildlife ecology, soil science, and forestry management. I am also certified to conduct prescribed burns and am listed on the Kansas forestry website for prescribed burns.
I am the Kansas state president of the National Deer Association, I’m sponsored by Moultrie Products, Deep Cover Outdoors, Squared Away Deer Minerals, and The Scrape Rope Company.
We are also active in supporting youth by introducing them to the outdoors by holding a kids archery day, and mentoring youth during the various hunting seasons (deer, turkey, squirrel, duck, upland birds). I am also a Kansas Hunter Education instructor.
