Life & Work with Edie Higgins of 23rd st Lawrence Kansas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edie Higgins.

Edie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got my apprenticeship as a tattoo artist shortly after dropping out of pursuing my biology degree. I was bored doing lab work and passionate about art so I took the leap. I dedicated all my time and energy to learning how to tattoo and immediately fell in love with it. I have been tattooing for around two years now and I couldn’t see myself doing any other job:)

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not. Trying to pick up a completely new skill is challenging enough, it’s nothing like drawing, Not to mention how difficult it is to balance other parts of your life during your apprenticeship. I was broke, tired, and my back hurt all the time lol.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a tattoo artist and have been for two years. I specialized in a vintage-y, distressed, detailed kind of black-work style that there really isn’t a good name for. However, it has quickly become my ‘thing’ and the main draw for new clients who can’t find anyone else who does that style. I’m most proud of taking the leap and chasing this dream. I’ve always thought that being a tattoo artist would be the coolest job ever but that it could never happen to me. Dropping all my future plans to chase something that seemed so impossible was super scary. But, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel like the ability to really connect with people is the most important. Of course doing good tattoos is important but I also think the relationship between me and my clients is a top priority. I want people to feel comfortable more than anything:) Getting tattooed can be super intimidating and my goal is always to make the interaction feel more like hanging out with a friend than paying to be poked by a needle for a few hours.
