Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Luther Smith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all began with a phone call. I remember there was a woman on the phone who was desperate for a person to assist her daughter with thoughts of severe depression and suicide. I had offered to assist her daughter in guiding and advising her through the difficult time that she was experiencing. Even though the mother was looking for a person who could help her biblically, she was apprehensive about allowing me to assist her daughter because I did not know where her daughter could go. Additionally, Biblical counseling, due to some of its practices and theological positions, has received a bad rap. My goal was to offer an alternative to some of this model, where counseling from a biblical perspective met a level of professionalism that was found in professional counseling centers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are some challenges with this. The business ebbs and flows sometimes. There are times when I have the privilege to see many counselees at a given time, and there are other times when it seems like I have very few counselees to guide and advise. Additionally, the type of care that I give is very focused, and it is a niche that many people do not recognize, so that is also very challenging.
Additionally, for full disclosure, I have to tell potential counselees that I am not licensed in all of my nomenclature, as well as when I have an initial session with them, and when counselees are researching for help either for themselves or someone else, this may keep them from exploring further what I do. Moreover, the economy also plays a role. As people are trying to survive and make ends meet, oftentimes, the thing that gets put on the back burner is mental health. Although my prices are reasonable, this is one expense on top of other costs that may impact counselees who are considering this service.

N(y)o͞o Mind Biblical Counseling seeks to guide and counsel individuals with the perspective of truth by utilizing a holistic approach to counseling. Those who receive counseling from N(y)o͞o Mind will work with counselors who observe physical, relational, and cognitive problems from a Biblical approach.
What separates us from other places is that I strive to implement the biblical perspective in not only the guiding and advising of counselees, but also how I approach the counselees, the questions that I ask, and even some of the home exercises I give to those with whom I have the opportunity to work.
Our brand is a butterfly, which is appropriate because I take inspiration from Romans 12:1-2, which says the following: Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” So the whole point is for a person who has a problem or a challenge they desire to work through to do so with a renewed mind and use this perspective to see things and operate differently. All of the things that I do is from this objective.

Many people deserve tons of credit, but I will mention several: My wife, Tanya, who has been an amazing support in encouraging me to start this service. A friend and mentor of mine, Dr. Christopher Cone, encouraged me and even some of the facilities when I was beginning, and a social media platform that contributed to the success that I have today. To Beth Haven Chruch here in Kansas City, which has provided me with an office and the equipment necessary for me to serve counselees, and even counselees who have referred other people to come and see me, as they have believed that this has assisted and helped them.
