Check Out Anna Wells’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Wells.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my photography journey LAST YEAR (believe it or not), a little after my second daughter (Jane) was born. It was really important for me to be able to find a job where I was able to stay at home, since my first child (Lily) was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Also, after many trips to Children’s Mercy for both my kiddos, it was hard to find a traditional 9-5 job that would allow that many hours away from work.

Somehow I discovered that I should give photography a try and once I decided to just bite the bullet and buy a camera, I absolutely loved it. I loved going to the sessions and meeting so many new and exciting people! I started off by offering free sessions to practice and then eventually, once I was more confident in my craft, started charging.

I would say photography is my hobby and it’s just an added bonus that I am able to make money while doing it! I love being able to capture someone’s unique story or wherever they may be in their walk of life. Getting to watch kids grow up through my lens makes me so happy. I would not be able to be where I am today if it weren’t for my husband working long hours or those people at the beginning who took a chance on me.

Photography is my dream job come true.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not all of my photography journey has been smooth sailing. I’ve definitely had times where I was kicking myself for not getting more shots or one specific shot that I had wanted, but that’s just how it will always go. There will always be that “one shot” or the “I could’ve ___”. There was also a time, after my 4-month-old had to have eye surgery, that I felt like giving up and putting my photography on hold. I felt like I had to be a mom first and that my babies needed me more than my career did. After a while, I finally found some sort of balance and I jumped right back into things offering sessions, posting on social media, and figuring out my own brand. This is where I think I grew stronger and solidified my feelings of wanting to be a photographer.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main focus is capturing the moments of life in every stage. Whether that is updating family photos, welcoming a new member, going to homecoming, or just simply encapsulating the love you share with another. Some of my most popular sessions are families and couples, but I love ALL types of sessions.

Some of my favorites to capture are newborns or creative “fine-art” portraits. I am most proud of my fine-art (especially for only being a year into my journey). I believe that what sets me a part from other photographers in the game is that I refuse to use presets and very rarely do I use AI in my editing. Every photo I take and edit is completely my manual labor. I cater my editing to whatever my client is envisioning and if my client has no idea, I get creative freedom!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe one of the best qualities to have is honest business practices and open communication. Honesty is incredibly important, because I’m not here to just sell you something or to try and persuade you to use me as your photographer. I want to let my clients know that I want the best for them and I will do my absolute best to use communication to figure out what their specific wants are for their session and final edited images.
