Check Out Meagan Garrett’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Garrett.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I graduated from KU with a degree in graphic design in December of ’19. I had an internship at a corporate office until the pandemic hit and I was let go.

I spent the next year and half working small freelance jobs until finding my place at another corporate agency. This time I knew it wasn’t the right fit, I stayed for a year before leaving to lead the marketing department at ULAH and LUNA, a men and women’s boutique in Woodside. I learned so much about fashion and fashion marketing while working there. I even got to help in the buying process which I loved so much.

After 3 years of working so closely in fashion marketing, I decided I wanted to start my own creative studio. There are so many incredible small businesses in KC that could use a boutique creative agency that really understands their audience and how to showcase their product in a way that connects with them.

I always say ‘we don’t do corporate crusty marketing’ – we’re the tastemaker agency for tastemaker brands. We specialize in content creation, art direction, campaign development for brands in fashion, beauty and lifestyle.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting The Market Media Co. has been anything but smooth. One of the biggest hurdles we’ve had to overcome is not only reaching our ideal audience but being able to convey the importance of strong marketing. It can make or break your business, especially social media, but if clients don’t see that it can be hard for them want to invest in that service.

Starting a business has also came with a fair amount of imposter syndrome and wondering if I’m doing the right thing and making the right moves. It’s been a huge learning process for me. I’ve always knew I would start my own business one day but there is so much that goes into that I’m learning every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a creative agency based in Kansas City specializing in art direction, content creation, design and strategy. We offer a fresh approach that blends strategy with aesthetics to create work that stands out from the competition and is never boring. We are known for blending lifestyle and editorial style content in our images and videos to give businesses a wide range of content to use on digital, print and social media platforms.

We know each business is unique which is why we create a package tailored to our clients needs and goals.
We really take care of customers through clear communication and over delivering on our promises. I love that I get to work so closely with other business owners in KC and help them bring their creative visions to life.

One project we were excited to release this year was the first issue of the Mixed Media magazine. This magazine is an extension of a Substack newsletter I write by the same name. What better way to show off our work in fashion marketing than to create our very own fashion magazine?

It features stories on fashion, fashion marketing, and includes 10 other contributing Substack writers. We wanted to bring all the things we love about Substack (the original stories, the photography, the unique points of view) and put into a print magazine. It launched this fall and is 144 pages of incredible stories, interviews with a couple KC locals, stunning photography, and no ads. We brought this entire project to life including the photography, design, and writing. It was a labor of love and we are so obsessed with how it turned out.

How do you think about happiness?
In work, I love when I put my heart and soul into a project and the outcome matches the vision I see in my mind. I love being able to grow my creative skills and get better and better in my practice. Learning new skills and overcoming challenges is really fulfilling to me.

In life, I love taking my dogs on walks, staying in and watching movies, and spending quality time with my family. That’s really what makes me the happiest. Work is nice and all but it’s the people in my life that makes everything more colorful.
