Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Mueller.
Hi Brittney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I worked in the corporate world for just shy of 8 years. I thought the corporate life was the only post-college path for me so I took it, not knowing there was something better out there for me. During the summer of 2022, with three little kids and a busy home life, I decided to leave my 9-5 and pursue a different calling: small business owner. I had always loved getting spray tans because of the way they made me feel. And something in me wanted to be able to offer that to other women. I saw a gap in the Prairie Village spray tanning mobile market and decided, I’m going for it, because why not? After a few months of training, studying and perfecting my craft, Bronzed by Britt was born in November 2022. Yes, entrepreneurship is scary and extremely unpredictable, but I would not trade my “job” for anything. Starting this business has truly been one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. I wake up and feel fulfilled because I have a purpose outside of my family that I am proud to call mine. I get to make other women feel beautiful. I’ve been able to make hundreds of new friends solely because someone chose to trust me with their spray tan. I’ve had the luxury of choosing my own hours and being my own boss, which allows me more time with my family. I always thought being an entrepreneur would be cool, but I really didn’t know if it was possible to achieve. Over the last three years, I’ve learned that yes, it is possible, with a strong support system, a little bit of grit and whole lot of hustle.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, being a small business owner has not always been easy. Like I mentioned before, it is the most unpredictable career I’ve ever had. I run into issues often, ranging from inventory delays to extremely slow service months. I remind myself that these issues are a necessary part of a business and working through these hard times, makes me into a better, more resilient owner.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner of a spray tanning business based in Prairie Village, KS. For the last (almost) three years, I have been mobile, meaning I travel to people’s homes to give them a luxury spray tan experience. I strive to provide an unmatched experience from the time a client books their appointment to the moment I leave their house (and then some). My number one goal is to make women feel and look their best. I am certain I have achieved this goal, based on reviews and feedback I have received from clients I have been lucky enough to tan.
I am most proud of how far I have come in just under three years. I’ve tanned hundreds of women for a million different reasons including: weddings, girls trips, postpartum pick-me-ups, homecoming, concerts, etc. I have a high number of returning clients and I am often receiving new clients from word of mouth reviews. I am also happy to report that I am moving into my first studio in Leawood, KS later this month! I will continue to provide the mobile experience on an as needed basis. I am extremely excited for this next step in my business, where I plan to take my spray tan services and offerings to another level for all of my wonderful clients.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find other small business owners that have done this before you and that are better at it than you. These mentors do not have to be in the same business, nor the same industry. They can be someone who you look up to and often go to for questions or advice. Lean on those around you and surround yourself with people that want to learn, grow and level-up their business.
