Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl Woods.
Hi Darryl, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got started after wanting photos of my oldest son playing flag football, the photographer I hired didn’t know how to do action games images he was just posing him Heisman, throwing poses etc.. At the time I worked for Kawasaki motors corporation and asked one of the staff photogs how they got action images. They took out with them and gave all the tips and ideas which I completely forgot when it cam time take photos of him playing but I practiced and slowly got better. As he progressed through his football my desire to get better shots grew and I started investing in better equipment and off we went !!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not really smooth the largest hurdle was learning how compose images and get the correct exposure in changing conditions. Once I got that somewhat work out I started getting approached by parents to take photos of their kids, they left out the pay portion ….lolol.
With photography you have to slow down and get the images exposed correctly before the posing and sometimes your soo nervous to do good you get out of sorts in the process.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now, I think I have my best following from Sports and motorcycle photography. I am the lead photographer for 810 Varsity who all sports for both the Kansas and Missouri side. While I creating images in all genres sports is the shining apple, I heard an athletic director say “You know it’s a good game when they send DWoods!”
I think what sets me apart is I strive to get my images right in the camera, meaning I am not trying to Photoshop an images that didn’t create and lately rely on AI!
I have been blessed to create images that viewers are sure I made it extreme editing and then I show them the image in the camera and they are amazed.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have had so many cheerleaders, but the best ones have been my previous and my current wife, they pushed to do my best and not to give up. I take every image as if they were my family or kids and that makes me give my best even when I don’t get the result I had planned in my head.
While the list is long my mother taught me one simple lesson, Whatever you do give 100% if you give 100% and you fail, you have no right to be sad or to feel like you failed, but if you give 99.9% and fail you will always question what would have happened if I gave 100% ??
I teach that to my kids and strive for it in all my projects.
