Inspiring Conversations with Martha Childers of Childers Counseling Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Childers.

Hi Martha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Personally, I’m a native of Missouri. Growing up I loved reading my older sister’s psychology and sociology books that she brought home from college. My enduring interest in human nature, beliefs, and life styles is what led me to become a counselor.

I lived and traveled in Europe, Asia, and Africa for 12 years and sojourned in Austria, England, Switzerland, Japan, India, and Iran. During that time, I learned to speak German, Japanese, and French. I appreciate and have a love of other cultures, and I enjoy diversity. While living in Japan, I practiced Zen through a variety of traditional arts for 3-1/2 years. Since that time, mindfulness has been an integral part of my life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a small business is very difficult. The first few years involved lots of hard work and financial resources.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Having lived and traveled overseas for 12 years has given me a world view. These experiences have served me well as a multicultural therapist.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
You never know what is going on in people’s lives until they tell you. Surface impressions are only surface.
