Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Williams.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Stacy Williams, and I’m the founder and facilitator of Mom Can We Talk, a community-centered event series focused on healing, understanding, and building bridges between parents, schools, and young people. These open, honest conversations have created safe spaces where families and communities can come together to support our youth in meaningful ways.
I started “Mom Can We Talk” mainly because of the conversation I had with my son & his high school buddies. They all had different stories, so I asked them if they were willing to come on my Podcast(Shh Just Got Real). Hence my first Mom Can We Talk roundtable talk. It was powerful. A year later, I did an all girls Mom Can We Talk. You know women like to talk, so that was the most powerful one yet. At these events, I now have Mental Health Therapists(RiseUp Resilency & Soulmine LLC) there and also community resources. Such as Bishop Sullivan, Rosebrooks Domestic Violence shelter, Housing Authority, The Health department, Synergy Services, Great Jobs KC, Fed-ex, Reconciliation Services, etc.
Secondly, I was physically assaulted at a young age. I held on to that for years, not telling my mother until a couple of years ago. So I grew up with no value in myself, promiscuous, mean & angry. Looking for love in all the wrong places. I don’t want our young adults feeling the way I did and not heal from it. Our kids are not mean & angry for nothing. They’re going through something: bullying, poverty, abuse, drugs, it could be just about anything!
In addition to our community events, I’m also offering Roundtable Talk discussions designed specifically for school-age students. These in-school or after-school sessions address the social and emotional challenges our youth face daily—topics such as peer pressure, trauma, bullying, identity, and emotional well-being. The goal is to help students express themselves, learn healthy ways to cope, provide resources, and connect with caring adults and mentors. I’ve done roundtable talks with Empire Dreams & The Boys & Girls club, on the calendar with Synergy Services, Hillcrest Transitional Center, & Halo. The Roundtable has also spilled into the adult world. I’ve done several for adults as well.
The logo for Mom Can We Talk is an illustration of the actual picture of myself at the age I was violated. If I can help parents understand why their kids are acting out. If I can get our young adults to understand that everyone has a story. If I can get the young adults to help us understand why they are angry, maybe we can eliminate some of this crime and negativity from our kids.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Challenges I’ve faced through my journey are finding people open to sharing their story, I’ve also had issues with finding locations to have my events. I don’t make any money off of these events, so I need space for free. Other than that, the Lord is leading me daily.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I work full-time for Literacy KC. An Adult education program. My job is to help people find work while they’re in our program. Literacy KC is an awesome organization to work for. They’ve supported me through my “Mom Can We Talk” journey as well. Mom Can We Talk is a Mental Health Community event normally held on Saturdays. I’m most proud of how the process is going. I’ve managed to get into several community event spaces and am working on getting into schools. What sets me apart from others is speaking not only with school-age children, but also having these talks with parents & schools as well. My follow-up will be sharing the information with others on what we can work on as a whole. It takes a village.
What’s next?
My plans for the future is to continue working on my Mom Can We Talk journaling app. This app will allow our youth to journal on their own device, chat with others, and have resources available when needed. I’d also like to get into schools and provide these roundtable talks to students, schools & parents.
