An Inspired Chat with Karyn Morrow of St. Joseph

Karyn, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I normally start the morning scrolling socials with latte number one. Since we’re in some weird Missouri summer at the beginning of October, I’ll go out and water my flowerbeds. Then, back to the phone to return emails with latte number two. If I’m really productive, a load of laundry might get started.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Karyn Morrow, and I created Clean Alchemy in 2022. The brand happened completely organically, and since I’m plagued with the mindset of, “Let me just see if I can do it,” I was knee-deep in fragrance and wax research before I could stop myself.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I’ve been so fortunate to travel abroad throughout my life. I’m so grateful to the people in my life who made these experiences happen. I wouldn’t want to choose one defining travel moment, because they’ve all shaped different aspects of myself. Spain created my love of art; Portugal showed me fashion; Jamaica was the introduction to all you can drink; and skiing the Swiss Alps was an absolute dream; but Italy will always be the love of my life. Standing in an eighteenth century village, while the sun rose over Tuscany, brought me to actual tears.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I mean, what day is it? My gosh, I have moments of giving up on a weekly basis, but it’s not who I am as a person. Quitting isn’t in my DNA.
In my humble opinion, one of the greatest skills you can develop is the ability to figure it out. If you run a company, there’s always a workaround you have to figure out.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
What I’ll say about the candle industry, is that there’s always something to learn. I’m never going to know everything there is to know, but I’ll never stop learning.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Being in the space of “midlife,” this is such a good question.
When I’m gone, I hope my children felt loved, my friends have a thousand memories of laugher, and I leave a story of perseverance.
