Story & Lesson Highlights with Yung Bee of Topeka

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Yung Bee . Check out our conversation below.

Yung , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The moment my son was born. It was the most incredible feeling I’ve ever felt, and I’ve felt a lot of feelings lol.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Yung Bee. I’m a hip hop artist from Topeka, KS. I specialize in lyric driven, reality based rap music about my thoughts, feelings, environment, and circumstances. I think I bring a level of literalism to rap that most artists don’t bring, even if it isn’t pretty or glamorous. I just released a joint album a few months ago with Big Goddo Flaco called “The Legend Of Flaco & Bee” and am currently working on another joint album with a producer out of Kansas City, Don Domingo.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My father. He worked for the same place for 33 years straight. He rarely ever called in and taught me that hard work was the way to get what you wanted. He is the reason I work so hard today.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I’ve dealt with many different issues that have left scars on my life from heartbreak to addiction to mental health struggles to PTSD from violent trauma I’ve experienced. Through it all my spirituality has been a healing force. I truly believe that the Higher Power, whom I choose to call “God”, provides us with all we need, it’s just up to us to figure out how to use the tools and resources we are provided. 12 step programs have also been a huge help in my healing journey.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Depends on which public version of myself we are talking about. The person that is displayed in my music is 100% the real me. That’s what makes music worth doing as it is the only way I have to publicly express my real self. However, the public version of myself that I display professionally is not who I authentically am, but more so a version of myself that I’ve tailored to maximize my professional success and get to as much money as I can. I don’t get out much so I’m not normally at public social events, I’m either at a music event, at work, or at home.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Raising my child. The work that I’m putting in now hopefully will pay off in raising him to be a good person.
