Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Papinsick.
Anthony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in rural northeastern Pennsylvania and moved often as a kid—spending time just outside Detroit for middle school and in Tulsa, Oklahoma for high school. From an early age I loved building things with my hands, and watching PBS’s NOVA sparked a deep curiosity for science. I also had a brother with Down syndrome who had complex medical needs, and that experience gave me an early appreciation for the importance of compassionate, thoughtful healthcare. When I shadowed my own dentist in high school, I discovered that dentistry combined everything I loved—science, intricate craftsmanship, and art. That path led me to the University of Tulsa as a pre-dental student, and eventually to my first-choice dental school, the University of Pennsylvania, one of the top programs in the country. While at Penn, I also met my future wife, a Kansas native and K-State grad who was completing her master’s in the School of Nursing as a nurse practitioner in pediatric oncology. After working as an associate dentist in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., I realized I wanted something different from the high-pressure, production-driven culture of many practices. I wanted to slow down, treat patients like family, and put a touch of art into every restoration, no matter how small. So together, my wife and I decided to make Kansas our permanent home, and I set out to build my dream practice from the ground up. That’s how Kansas Dental Center was born—founded on the philosophy of finding excellence in the little things, and on the belief that dentistry is both science and art. Whether it’s a simple filling, a crown, or cosmetic veneers, I’ve learned that the details matter most, because unlike many medical procedures, the body cannot “heal” a tooth—it’s entirely in the dentist’s hands to restore nature and give patients a confident smile.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a dental practice from scratch has been incredibly rewarding, but definitely not a smooth road. Dentistry itself is already a demanding profession, and layering on the challenges of being a small business owner brought a whole new set of struggles. Like many young dentists, I graduated with hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt, and taking on the financial risk of building a practice from the ground up was daunting. On top of that, Kansas City is often considered an oversaturated dental market, so establishing myself and earning trust as the “new dentist in town” came with extra challenges. Even now, there are long hours and constant learning curves—whether it’s navigating the business side of dentistry, leading a team, or working through the increasing difficulties with insurance companies that sometimes undervalue or restrict the care my patients genuinely need. There have been moments of self-doubt, especially when comparing myself to more established offices, but I’ve stayed grounded in the values that led me here: slowing down, focusing on excellence in the little things, and treating each patient like family. The road hasn’t been smooth, but the struggles continue to shape me into a better dentist, a stronger business owner, and a more committed advocate for my patients.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Kansas Dental Center is a general and cosmetic dental practice in Overland Park built around a simple but powerful philosophy: excellence lives in the little things. We take the time to focus on details that many people might overlook—whether it’s the anatomy of a single filling or the precision of a crown. Unlike many offices that emphasize speed and production, our mission is to treat every patient like family and to put a touch of art into everything we do.
We specialize in comprehensive care, from preventive and restorative dentistry to advanced cosmetic services. Patients often tell us they appreciate that when they come to Kansas Dental Center, they see the same dentist at every visit—me. That consistency helps build trust and long-term relationships, and allows me to truly understand their dental history and goals. We also schedule longer hygiene appointments than most offices so we can provide individualized, unrushed care. And while we embrace modern technology and advanced materials, we never lose sight of the personal connection that makes patients feel comfortable and valued.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is that Kansas Dental Center has become known for quality, compassion, and detail. Our brand is not about flashy marketing—it’s about creating an experience where patients feel cared for, respected, and confident in their smiles. In a city filled with dental options, we’ve earned loyalty by staying true to our values: slowing down, prioritizing people over production, and delivering dentistry that blends science with artistry.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people are surprised to learn that I’m a huge Ghostbusters fan. In fact, if you look closely around Kansas Dental Center, you’ll spot little Easter eggs from the movies—like a replica proton pack hanging on the wall. It’s a small way to bring some personality and fun into the practice, and patients (especially kids and fellow fans) always get a kick out of it. Dentistry can sometimes feel intimidating, so I enjoy weaving in touches like that to create a space that feels welcoming, unique, and true to who I am.
