Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Henry.
Hi Alyssa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story with photography started back in high school, I picked up a few clients here and there and instantly fell in love with capturing people’s stories. When I moved from Topeka to Lawrence, I set my camera aside for a few years to focus on work and school, especially during the whirlwind of COVID.
About a year and a half ago, I picked it back up, and it just clicked. I realized my heart was in the wedding industry. Since then, I’ve been building a photography business that feels completely aligned with who I am. My style has grown into what I call refined, editorial, artful, and lasting. My brand is about creating timeless work while giving couples an experience that feels fun, comfortable, and genuine.
That’s how I’ve landed where I am today: leaning into creativity, connection, and building a brand that feels true to me and the legacy I want to create.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started out, I struggled with confidence and comparison. It’s so easy to look at other photographers and feel like you’re behind or not “good enough.”
On top of that, balancing work, school, and life while trying to grow a business was a challenge. There were seasons where I questioned if I should even keep going, or if it would ever turn into something real.
But those struggles pushed me to refine my style, set boundaries, and trust the process. I’ve learned that consistency beats perfection, and that building a business isn’t about skipping the hard parts – it’s about growing through them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a wedding and portrait photographer, and I like to say my work is all about creating images that feel refined, editorial, artful, and lasting. I specialize in weddings, couples, and families, but my heart really beats for documenting love stories in a way that feels timeless yet genuine.
I think what sets me apart is the experience I give my clients. I want people to feel comfortable in front of my camera, like they can truly be themselves, while still walking away with photos that look elevated and intentional. It’s not just about pretty pictures; it’s about giving couples and families a chance to slow down, connect, and actually enjoy the moment together.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how quickly my business has grown in just the past year and a half. I’ve gone from picking my camera back up after years away to building a brand that feels fully aligned with who I am and getting to celebrate with couples on one of the most important days of their lives is something I’ll never take for granted.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the photography industry, especially weddings, is going to keep moving toward experiences over just deliverables. Couples don’t just want pretty photos anymore; they want someone who feels like a trusted friend, who can guide them through the day, and who creates an atmosphere where they can be fully present.
I also see a shift toward more intentional, artful imagery. People are gravitating away from overly posed or “cookie cutter” shots and leaning into storytelling, editorial vibes, and photos that actually feel like them. Trends will come and go (moody edits, light + airy, film tones) but I think timeless work that balances candid emotion with refined artistry will always last.
On the business side, I think we’ll also see photographers offering more unique client experiences. Things like custom guides, faster sneak peeks, hybrid digital + film coverage, and personalized touches that set them apart. It’s not just about handing over a gallery; it’s about creating a full experience couples will rave about.
