Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Clark.
Hi Calvin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my business in 2022 while I was a senior at Joplin High School. I wanted to open a company that could have been beneficial to the four states, but especially the community of Joplin, Missouri. I felt that with my accolades in academics (cum laude graduate, 3.8 cumulative GPA, and a National Honor Society member), I would have been the perfect person to assist the community. Also, Joplin High School helped me gain leadership skills through clubs such as Joplin Youth Council, mentorship programs, and being a four-year member of the Joplin High School basketball team.
At first, my service had a very rough start with minimal clientele. At times, I wondered if it would benefit the community to open another service or business, but I continued to pray to God if this was the right path for me. While I was in my Freshman year at Missouri Southern State University, I received my first client in Brazil via Zoom. She was beyond pleased with my work and left me a glowing review on Facebook. I then got another client based on the first client’s review. Then the next thing I knew, community referrals were building my clientele from the ground up.
Now in 2025, I have the luxury of orchestrating backpack drives, giveaways, and being a positive influence on the youth in the Joplin community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been far from a smooth road. Some struggles along the way have been limited clientele in the beginning, uncertainty regarding the future of my business, and balancing being a full-time student and entrepreneur. As I said previously, with no clientele, I questioned the impact I was making. I wanted to empower the youth and give them uncharted confidence regarding life and academics. This caused sleepless nights, numerous conversations with God, and countless hours of strategic planning to right the wrongs. But my patience, hard work, and talks with God ultimately paid off as my business continued to grow.
However, as my business grew I found discovered the struggle of running a business and being a college student. I want to be completely transparent in this article and give the reader the real me. As I am scheduled to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a minor in Human Resources, I am still finding the common ground of being an entrepreneur and an active student at Missouri Southern State University. My cumulative GPA is a 3.7, and I am proud to say that I have been featured on the Dean’s List. But besides this, I am also a Resident Assistant as well as a part-time employee. These obligations have instilled in me a great sense of gratitude. I find true joy in helping others succeed, and whether that’s on campus, through my business, or through my part-time job, I am constantly doing so.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I provide personalized tutoring services for K-12 throughout the Jasper County area. When it comes to my specializations, I can tutor in any subject at any grade level, K-12. This helps me tailor my sessions according to the students’ needs. I am known for my constant dedication to the community and to my clients. I am most proud of the backpack drives that I have been able to put on for 2 years in a row. I am also proud of the work that my students put in day in and day out. My goal is to make a lasting impact on the community of the four states, and I feel that I am well on my way.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Apps that help me do my best in life are Notes and Facebook. I love the Notes app because I always have direction to follow throughout my day, and it keeps my duties well-organized. I love Facebook because it gives me a chance to connect with the community as well as advertise my brand.
Websites that help me with my tutoring service are K5 learning, Kuta Software, and Dese. These websites give me great resources to use for my students, as well as give me ideas to construct practice problems and tests.
