Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Hughes Elizabeth Lancaster of Highs and Lows LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hughes Elizabeth Lancaster.

Hi Sarah Hughes, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are so proud to be a woman owned ABA Therapy Center. Our passion for this field comes from 10+ years of experience working with individuals with significant behaviors in the school setting. Elizabeth also has a daughter with significant needs which drives her to want to help other families with their journey. We wanted to branch out into the private sector to help reach more families and be a strong resource in our community. We started by ourselves to provide a strong foundation for the business but we have started to expand our staff because the need is so great in our community. Our hope is to be able to provide services for as many individuals as possible while maintaining the integrity of our program. Families deserve to have quicker access to services and we hope to shorten those waitlists. We would not be where we are without the love and unconditional support of our families and close friends. Owning a small business really is a family affair, each member supports us in the day to day operations.
Sarah is married to her husband Tyler and they have a young daughter, Ava. They love watching her play soccer, and going to KC Current games together and taking their dog Hershey to the lake.
Elizabeth is married to her husband Brad, with their 3 children, Hanna, Kennadi, and Cooper. They love watching them do dance, taekwondo, and Special Olympics Sports, and going to Mavericks games and watching movies together. We are so thankful for the people in our lives who help make our dreams come true.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s important for us to understand the challenges that these families go through to better advocate for services through commercial insurance and Medicaid. The process can be daunting and sometimes emotional when trying to help these vulnerable families. They are typically in a desperate place for supports and it can be difficult to get through all the red tape of insurance, this can slow down or halt services that are so desperately needed. We feel for our families and do our best to advocate for their needs.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We serve individuals 2-21 with developmental disabilities who need a little extra support.
At Highs and Lows Center, we believe that each individual is unique and deserves the right to be heard, included, and valued in our community, no matter their differences. Our goal is to help each individual develop socially significant behaviors that strengthen communication skills, balance sensory processing needs, and build positive behaviors while reducing challenging behaviors.

We are unique in that we provide individualized care in a more intimate setting. We are a small practice that we built ourselves with a client centered focus. We pride ourselves in meeting each child where they’re at and providing them a safe environment to be the best version of themselves. Relationships and collaboration are the foundation of our services. We provide assessments, direct therapy, social skills, and parent training based on client specific need.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Our advice for those starting out would be do a lot of research and know your “why”. Know what your end goal is to stay focused on the hard days, because there will be hard days. Connecting with those in the field and finding a good support system for the ins and outs of your specific business can provide a good sounding board for the success of your day to day.
