Today we’d like to introduce you to James Hargrave.

James Hargrave

Hi James, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a family well below the poverty line, and those early experiences with financial hardship deeply shaped my perspective and purpose. As I faced my own challenges—student loans, debt, and the weight of trying to create a better future—I made plenty of mistakes. I eventually realized I didn’t have to take on the burden of security alone. Together with my wife, we built a life on our terms, rooted in values like discipline, unity, and intentional growth. This journey so far has taught us that true success is not about personal achievement—it’s about lifting others up and building something that lasts together.

For my professional career, I started in banking, but I soon transitioned into the investment world at Vanguard. Determined to become the best financial planner I could be, I pushed myself to grow—earning an MBA, completing my CFPⓇ, and passing the Series 7 and 63 exams, all within four years. I started at the ground level and worked my way up to managing a book of high-net-worth clients.

After Vanguard, I joined LearnVest, a fast-paced financial planning startup, where I focused on all areas of personal finance—from cash flow and taxes to insurance and long-term planning. I also continued to expand my knowledge, earning my CLUⓇ designation and my Life & Health insurance license.

Later, I took on the role of Director of Financial Planning at a newly founded firm. There, I helped shape the business from the ground up, leading day-to-day operations and working directly with 74 families on their financial planning needs. Over six years, I learned countless lessons in leadership, business, and life that I now carry into this next chapter.

This all led my wife and me to be in a financial position to take a risk—she having more faith than I did. When I proposed the business plan versus taking a new job, she asked me, “So are you going to start this company now, or when you quit the new job?” There’s not much in life that will motivate you more than someone having unwavering belief in you.

From that, Pillar Financial Planning was born. My goal is to partner with families—whether through hourly planning, flat fees, or asset management—to help them organize their cash flow, taxes, insurance, investments, and estate planning around their values and goals. I want to both encourage and challenge them to make progress on their version of financial independence.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is never a smooth road.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is figuring out how to build a meaningful career in an industry where I’ve often seen greed take center stage. Working at larger firms, you don’t get to decide how conflicts of interest are handled, and that can be deeply discouraging when you’re trying to do the right thing for clients while making a living.

On the personal side, there have been more struggles than I can count—from injuries and health issues to my own stubbornness at times, trying to push things forward on my own instead of partnering with my spouse. We’ve experienced the heartbreak of losing family members, the loss of clients who had become friends, and the everyday challenges that come with raising a family.

Still, the hard times have pushed us to grow. They’ve forced us to let go of what isn’t working, communicate more honestly, and keep figuring out how to navigate what’s next—together.

As you know, we’re big fans of Pillar Financial Planning. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Pillar Financial Planning, I work with individuals and families who want more than just “investment advice.” My focus is on building personalized, comprehensive financial plans that connect the dots between taxes, investments, retirement, business ownership, and everyday money decisions.

What I’m known for, and what sets me apart, is the ability to simplify complex financial topics and put them into action. Whether it’s deciding how to pay yourself as a business owner, opening a solo 401(k), navigating Roth strategies, or weighing the trade-offs of renting vs. buying a home, I bring clarity and a practical path forward in a world of complexity.

I built Pillar Financial Planning to be independent and transparent, so clients know every recommendation is in their best interest. As a Fee-Only advisor, I’m not influenced by commissions or other revenue sources. I specialize in charging hourly or a flat upfront fee with a monthly subscription to ensure transparency. That independence is something I’m deeply proud of, brand-wise.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My wife is the biggest credit for having belief in me. Jumping out from a regular paycheck later in life with multiple responsibilities is a scary proposal. I am blessed by how quickly this business has grown.

I have been lucky to be mentored and to create close friendships with several other financial planning firm founders. Currently, I am meeting regularly with a group of other founders. In particular, three of them—Bud, Nick, and Prudence—have helped me significantly by sharing insights on how to structure the firm’s tech stack, compliance, taxes, marketing, and client experience and strategy. They help me day by day to make it a better firm. They also challenge me to slow down and stay patient. I have had a lot of success early on, and naturally, I want more success. But I need to move slowly, or I will get overwhelmed and risk burnout. Belief and the discipline of taking small steps daily will win in the long term.
