David Rearic shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi David, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Every day is something new. It really all starts the night before, the late late hours, early in the morning, sitting at my laptop editing. The hours that the world is quiet and I’m able to get locked in. I’ll usually start my actual day around 10 or 11, hang out with my wife and kids as much as I can, and then get ready for whichever game I have that evening. Rinse and repeat.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Lexington, Kentucky based photographer specializing in sports, portraits, concerts, lifestyle, and brands. More importantly, I am a husband and a father to twins. 12 years in, I can truly say that I am living the dream.
I’ve branded the sports side of my business “The Athlete’s Photographer” because that is what I strive to be. Someone who is there to capture all of the moments on the field or court, but also someone they can call on when they need Senior Portraits, engagement photos, and maybe even wedding photos one day.
I have recently partnered with local car dealership, Paul Miller Motor Company, to bring professional sports photography at no cost to student athletes of all ages across Central Kentucky. Through this partnership, I am able to pick about 8 games a month, all kinds of sports and levels, and capture lifelong memories for these kids.
I have also gotten into the team photo business more seriously here lately. Teamed up with my good friend and fellow photographer, JT Marshall. We strive to bring the D1 media day experience right to each high school, middle school, youth league, even smaller colleges and club teams. It’s all about the experience. More on that coming soon!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Definitely my grandfather and my dad. They really showed me at a young age what working hard every day for your family, networking, and persevering. It’s truly about the hustle you put in and the relationships you build along the way. Treating people with kindness, respect, and showing gratitude.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Many times. Working for yourself and running your own business is HARD. Most of all, setbacks SUCK. But it’s about getting back up and going after it again. Finding a way to adapt and continue along the journey. Every time I’ve seen a setback, I’ve always made sure there was an even bigger comeback. I like to think that I have the biggest ideas when adversity strikes. But more than anything, prayer has gotten me through. Always trusting in God when facing troubled waters. He always makes a way.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I’d hope they would say my faith, family, and my character. I’ve always been known to have big ambitions but at the end of the day, my faith journey is what I really want to take the drivers seat in life. Also leaving a legacy for my kids.
Everyone always says “I feel like you know everybody”, and they aren’t wrong. One of the biggest keys to that is making friends with everyone and treating them with respect. One of my favorite quotes of all time is “People will forget what you say, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you treated them.” That’s something I try to take into every situation. I’m far from perfect, but that’s the standard I live by. You really never know the impact you might make on someone’s life or how that connection is going to affect an outcome for you down the road.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I definitely think that I have found my calling in life. It has taken work and time to get her but this is what I was ment to do, My “assignment”. I’ve worked so many random jobs, gained so much random knowledge along the way, that I am forever grateful for. But getting to do photography full time, is truly fulfilling to me. Sometimes you have to go through the weeds to get to the green pasture. This is my pasture and I am extremely blessed to have gotten here. All glory to God. A lot of prayer, late nights, long days in the sun, have led me to where I am now. Definitely don’t think I’ve come close to reaching my potential, but these days are pretty surreal.
