Katheryne Johnson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Katheryne, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am being called to be seen. To share myself. Not just my work, but me as a person.
I’ve always been open to sharing things that I have done, and accomplished whether its music videos, beautiful photography, or art shows. I have been getting a pull to share my own thoughts, feelings, and mostly wisdom that I have acquired over the years.
I have hidden behind the camera for over a decade now, its time to share some pearls.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello,
I am Katheryne Johnson and I am a photographer from Wyandotte, Kansas. I first picked up a camera when I 18 studying art in college. I eventually transferred schools and majored in film. One of my professors mentioned that a way to strengthen ones eye (as a director), is to shoot film photography. That was around 2016, and since then, I’ve been shooting almost exclusively on film.
I like to find honest moments in life to shoot. A neighbor saying hello, taking a friend our for lunch, or even someone waiting for a treat on a hot day are all moments I find so innately human. Human moments I find are very beautiful. These are things that reminds us that we are all connected.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a told I was a stubborn little girl. Hard-headed. Wouldn’t listen. Talked back. Wasn’t afraid of authority of any kind. I evolved to become an accommodating, quiet, fearful teenager and adult out of survival. Around age 20, I realized that didn’t serve me and intended to change.
Looking back, I see a fearless, integral, attuned, and spirited little girl. I am stepping out of survival, and returning to who I innately am. Just older, wiser, and louder. It feels so good to be back.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are so wise. You know it. Others know it. You are also so loving, caring, and very passionate about doing whats right. Others might try to hush your passion, don’t let them.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
People live multiple lifetimes. I also believe that we all are interconnected and can channel into each others energies and lives. I cannot currently prove either, but it is fun to believe that.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
We are all the same. We have the same wants, hopes, and needs. It may look different per person and demographic, but I truly believe we all want a community, to love and to be loved, understood, a sense of security, and the ability to leave an impactful and lasting legacy.
I think (hope) we are coming around to recognizing that.
