Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick & Stacy German.
Hi Nick & Stacy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We both grew up in northern Iowa, where life was simple and centered on family, hard work, and community. It’s where we raised our kids and built our careers, Stacy in nursing and senior wellness, and Nick in corporate leadership, project management, and the skilled trades. For over 20 years, we each poured ourselves into those paths, but deep down we knew we wanted something more.
We wanted to make a bigger impact, to do work that truly mattered, and to build something meaningful together. As much as we loved our roots, staying in rural Iowa didn’t feel like the future we were meant to create. So, we did something bold: we packed up our family, moved to Blue Springs, and started fresh.
Once the dust settled from uprooting our lives, Secure Spaces was born. At first, we focused on home safety and security, but as we spent more time listening to families in our community, we realized there was a much bigger need. The senior population is growing rapidly, but the services to help them stay in their homes haven’t kept pace. There’s a real gap when it comes to keeping aging adults safe, independent, and comfortable in the homes they love.
That’s where we knew we could step in. We took the skills and experience we’d built over two decades and created Secure Spaces as a one-stop shop for senior-focused home safety solutions. Today, we specialize in everything from safety assessments and fall-prevention upgrades to handyman services, home modifications, and ongoing maintenance support.
For us, this is more than a business. It’s our way of making a difference, of using what we know and love to serve others, build something lasting, and hopefully show our kids that it’s never too late to follow your heart and create the life you’re meant for.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but honestly is it ever? Starting something new always comes with twists and turns, and we’ve had to adapt and pivot along the way. But the truth is, we feel so fortunate to be on this journey together. We took a chance on ourselves, and it has paid off in ways we never could have imagined.
There have been challenges and plenty of learning curves. Running a small business has stretched us in ways that we didn’t expect, but also taught us so much, not just about starting a business, but about ourselves and how we work as a team. The most rewarding part is seeing the difference we’re making right here in our local communities. And at the end of the day, we wouldn’t trade the bumps in the road, because they’ve brought us to where we are today, doing work we love, side by side, making an impact that truly fills our hearts.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Secure Spaces is about helping aging adults stay safe, independent, and comfortable in the homes they love. What really sets us apart is that we’re a husband-and-wife team, and we both show up to every visit. Families get the skilled eyes of a nurse and home safety specialist alongside the hands-on experience of a seasoned tradesman and home modification specialist. That combination makes our approach unique. We’re able to see the big picture while also fixing the small details that make a home safer.
Day to day, we specialize in home safety solutions including senior-focused handyman work, fall-prevention upgrades like grab bars and handrails, home modifications, home safety and security assessments, and even ongoing home maintenance support for families who want extra peace of mind. We’re known for blending clinical insight with practical know-how, and for treating every project like it’s for our own family.
We built Secure Spaces completely from the ground up, just the two of us and a vision. From our website and social media to scheduling, marketing, and every single job we do, it’s all us. Brand-wise, we’re proud that what you see is what you get, real people, doing meaningful work, with no shortcuts.
We feel lucky every day that we get to do this work together. Secure Spaces gives us the chance to use our skills to make a difference and give back to the communities in the Greater KC metro.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that surprises most people is that Secure Spaces isn’t part of a franchise and we don’t have a big team behind the scenes… it’s just the two of us. People are often shocked when they find out we built this from scratch, starting with nothing but an idea and the willingness to figure it out as we went. We designed our own website, created our own marketing materials, run our own social media, and of course, we’re the ones who show up to every single job.
What we didn’t know, we learned in a hurry. We made mistakes, adjusted, and kept going. And in the process, we’ve discovered how much we love building something together. For us, it’s not just about making homes safer, it’s about proving to ourselves, our kids, and our community that when you bet on yourself, amazing things can happen.
