Ty Clef shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Ty, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
“Ooof! Let’s kick off the conversation with something big! Haha.. well, in all honesty? This is a question I’ve been asking myself frequently as of late. Maybe it’s because I just turned 30? But, as I look back on my journey as a performer, I’m not 100% sure what my end goal was. I used to put up this façade, and told myself that performing and making art was my way of staying mentally sane, or distancing myself away from negativity. Which is STILL partially true. But In the back of my mind, there was always a glimmer of hope. I prayed I’d get discovered. I prayed, I’d get some kind of fan base. I prayed, that people would show love, and appreciation towards my art. But if I’m being honest with myself? I never had a plan. If I had the chance? There’s so many things I would’l have done differently in the beginning of my journey instead of wandering around.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello everyone! My name is TyQuan, Aka “Ty-Clef”! As a creative, I’ve dabbled in almost every art form! I’m a choreographer, I’ve played instruments, I’ve acted, I’ve done musical theater, I’ve done sketch work, THE WORKS! But overall? I’m mostly known for performing my personal music under the alias Ty-Clef and dancing/ choreographing for my dance group I founded back in 2018 called, “Double Take Industries”.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
To this day, I’ll always give my love and respect to “Relly the Rebel”. She’s the founder of Jawbreakers Ent. (An old dance group I joined back in 2016). She’s a power house, a mentor, and a living example of what it means to have a dream and to chase after it, NO. MATTER. WHAT! The biggest lesson I’ve learned? Was to always invest in myself! And remember to ALWAYS, stand ten toes for my art. And that I should never give my art freely or without an exchange.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
This is actually something I do frequently! I actually started my music journey because I took the pain from a break up, and wrote my feelings down to escape. Every song I’ve ever made, has been based off of true experiences and genuine emotions.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
To an extent? Yes…. Performing is what I do! It’s in my veins! Now do I walk around with high energy 24/7? No, But when I hit that stage? I’m truly sharing my soul and passion with the audience! It’s all I know.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Moving out of Missouri instantly after high school….
