Meet Lebeka Fox of Fox Child and Family Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lebeka Fox.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into helping children began in my 20s when I volunteered with an AmeriCorps program in New York City’s inner city. Working in schools there, I met a young boy who had experienced sexual abuse. We spent a lot of time together, and while I deeply wanted to support him, I realized I didn’t have the tools or knowledge to truly help. That experience was a turning point for me—it sparked a passion to better understand how to support children facing trauma and led me to pursue a degree in social work.
After earning my degree, I dove into learning everything I could about child trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and strengthening parent-child relationships. I started as a solo practitioner, working directly with kids and families, which was incredibly rewarding but also showed me the need for broader impact. In 2016, I took a leap and founded a group practice. What began as a small endeavor has grown into a team of over 25 therapists serving the Kansas City region.
One of the most fulfilling parts of this journey has been training other therapists. I’m passionate about equipping them with the skills to provide effective, compassionate care for children. Watching our group grow and seeing the impact we’re making in our community has been nothing short of incredible. It’s a privilege to do this work and to keep learning alongside the families and therapists I serve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a group practice hasn’t always been a smooth road, but the challenges have shaped us into a stronger team. One of the biggest hurdles came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overnight, we had to pivot to telehealth, learning how to provide therapy to children virtually while ensuring our approach remained effective and engaging. As mental health needs surged, we worked tirelessly to meet the demand, all while implementing strict health and safety protocols to protect our clients and team.

Beyond COVID, managing the administrative side of the practice—like ensuring seamless billing and operations—has been a learning curve. For example, we once faced a setback when we discovered a biller hadn’t processed claims properly, leading to unpaid services and some intense late-night problem-solving. Despite these obstacles, each challenge has taught us resilience and deepened our commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care for kids and families in Kansas City.

We’ve been impressed with Fox Child and Family Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I Like Best About Kansas City:
Coming from the fast-paced chaos of New York City, I adore Kansas City’s approachable, slower vibe. It’s a breath of fresh air for families, with so much space to relax and connect. The city shines with its family-friendly offerings—parks, accessible playgrounds, and gems like Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead and the Kansas City Zoo. I’m especially grateful for the local government’s investment in creating these welcoming, child-friendly spaces that make it easy for families to enjoy quality time together.
What I Like Least About Kansas City:
If I had to pick one downside, it’s the limited variety of food options compared to New York. I miss the hole-in-the-wall spots with diverse, global flavors—health food joints, authentic Asian restaurants, you name it. Kansas City’s food scene is growing, but it doesn’t quite match that eclectic mix I grew up with. That said, it’s easier on my wallet, so I can’t complain too much!
