Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Rose.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my photography journey 5 years ago. I always had a passion for it as a kid but never had a professional camera. After I had my first son, I decided this was something I really wanted to pursue. I had no idea how expensive cameras were until I started my research. At the time, my fiancé and I were living in a tiny apartment, living off of one income so that I could stay at home with our child. There was no way I could afford a camera at that time, but I was determined to figure it out. I had come up with the idea of asking my parents and grandparents if they would consider pitching in towards one vs buying me other stuff for Christmas. That’s when my mom mentioned she had a camera and generously said I could use it. I didn’t know much about cameras then, but I was so excited I didn’t care if it wasn’t the “best” camera out at the time. I spent my first few years working with a Nikon ds3200, a camera that had come out in 2012. Again, not knowing much, just being grateful I made it work. Unfortunately, come 6 days before Christmas, I was shot twice from the 3rd story of my apartment building through the window. The bullets weren’t intended for me, they were meant for a neighbor, but I sadly suffered from some minors with weapons they should have never had. The reason I mention the situation is because it was really hard on me for a few of years. I was thankful to be alive, but I had lost my front teeth and struggled with my mental health real badly. Thankfully, in time, I was blessed by a donation I will forever be grateful for; a couple my grandparents were friends with paid for me to get implants. That was a really painful experience that took a lot of time to complete. Thankfully, after multiple surgeries, my confidence was restored, and my mental health started improving. I was finally able to start focusing on what I loved again. I started booking more shoots, and eventually, I upgraded my camera right before I shot my very first large wedding. Getting a new camera was like opening a door to another universe. I didn’t realize the features I had been missing until I had them, and it all changed the game for me. My skills with both shooting and editing began to improve, and I was feeling more confident than ever. Even though I always loved photography, I had often struggled with not being fully satisfied with my work both while shooting and editing. I stayed hungry though, and today I am extremely confident and happy with my work. I had a high-risk pregnancy in 2024, and I had to take it easy, but just 4 weeks postpartum, I was shooting another wedding, and once fully cleared by my dr, I started booking away! It hasn’t been the easiest journey but it has been so meaningful and rewarding. I am very happy and thankful to have this career that also allows me so much time with my children.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth, but each obstacle has brought forward so much knowledge that I am incredibly grateful for. I think I covered most of my challenges in my previous response. To summarize though, I faced mental and physical health issues as well as equipment challenges. All of which made me into the confident person and photographer I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a lifestyle photographer. Pretty much any shoot that involves people, I do. A lot of my most commonly booked sessions are family and newborn. I absolutely love every aspect of my job, but getting to capture people grow over the years is one of my favorite parts. I’ve got to capture people go from being in the early stages of dating, to getting engaged, married, and then starting a family of their own. It is such a special career. I am extremely proud and grateful for the trust and faith my clients have in me. Being a lifestyle photographer means I am often included in my clients’ really big life moments, from capturing their first kiss as a married couple to being in the delivery room capturing their child’s first breath. It’s a HUGE deal, and I am so thankful to be a part of it and provide them with images that will tell the story of their memories for a lifetime and so on.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
My profession consists of a lot of risk, which is funny because I am not really fond of taking them. I do like familiarity and would say I prefer it, but I think I thrive being pushed outside of my comfort zone. Each session I book there is a million risks that come with it. Ranging from location, weather, time, personalities, people’s moods that day (especially the kiddos), etc. The only thing I can guarantee is that I will be there with my camera, knowledge, and commitment to making your session an experience you’ll enjoy, leaving you with photos you’ll cherish forever.
Pricing:
- My sessions typically run $150 for 30 minutes or $250 for an hour. Included in all of my sessions is a professionally edited digital album without an image limit and a print release. That price typically wouldn’t change unless there is a travel fee or if I am capturing a large amount of people. Weddings and births also vary in pricing depending on the amount of coverage necessary and location.
- I am about to be introducing mini sessions as a standard session. Those will be priced at $100 for 10 minutes and will also include what my other sessions do however the location list for those sessions will be limited to fewer options. More details on that will come out via my FB page and website soon!
