Life & Work with Marc Dunham of Merriam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Dunham.

Hi Marc, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career started as a young kid going to work with my dad in the summers and learning home repairs and remodeling. In my early 20’s I started working with remodeling companies improving my skill levels and learning new skills. Over the years I stayed invested in the remodeling industry increasing my skill sets, skill levels and improving my confidence. After a short tenure with the last company I worked for, I found that I had the ability to sell jobs and write estimates while also doing the work. I made the decision that I would be better off starting my own company.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many bumps in the road but nothing that couldn’t be overcome. A few slow months, some financial struggles along with acquiring necessary tools to improve performance.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do home remodeling and home repair. I mostly specialize in smaller projects since it is just me but have taken on larger projects. I do more bathroom remodels and deck builds more so than other projects as well as lots of smaller repair and paint projects. I will take on pretty much anything a person needs as I enjoy challenges and just overall helping people get things done.
One of the things I hear from a lot of clients is that they like that I am easy to work with. I do what I can to meet the needs of a home owner. Especially if its something that really needs done and there is a tight budget.
The one thing I am most proud of is myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and becoming my own business owner. It’s a scary step that I only dreamed about in the past.
I would say that in my industry, I stand out from others since I am willing to work with clients, I don’t force them into work they don’t need or want, I listen to what they want, I communicate as best I can and I try to stay budget friendly.

Any big plans?
Not planning any big changes. I just want to keep consistently busy. I do plan in 15 years or so possibly selling the company and retiring to do some other types of work that I have been dreaming of doing.
