Megan Colwell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Megan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Being a woman in her late 30’s, I find that I prefer slow-paced, relaxed days as much as possible. A typical day for me begins sans alarm, instead opting to wake up when my body naturally feels most rested. I’m grateful that my remote job as a Marketing Art Director and Independent Wood Artist afford me that luxury.
Then, I let my senior dog outside and give him some water before I fix myself a morning coffee. Afterwards, I stretch and get a little workout in to wake up and check in with my body. That is my favorite time of day to also get some journaling jotted and catch up on my emails and notifications.
After I’m showered and dressed, I’ll dive into my 9-5 at Fun Love Media. The morning to mid-afternoon is when I feel most creative, so I usually tackle my to-do list from challenging to easy work tasks.
When I’m all caught up, I love to spend late afternoons reading on my porch, in my hammock, while my dog enjoys sunbathing and sniffs. I might go grab some lunch or run a few errands.
Evenings are when I do my hobbies: Puzzle, crochet, play billiards, or color. I like to turn on some comedy in the background, maybe discover a new comedian or revisit a classic rom-com movie.
For the most part my days are wildly chill. I like it that way.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure, I’d love to! My name is Megan, and I’m a multidisciplinary visual communicator who blends artistic flair with strategic thinking. Born and raised in Kansas City, my work draws deeply from Midwest roots of kindness, helpfulness, and connection.
As Art Director at Fun Love Media (a social media marketing agency based in Houston, TX), I help craft stunning brand narratives across social platforms and podcast channels, working closely with founder Britney Crosson to amplify brands with purpose.
I like to consider myself a thoughtful, funny, organized creative nerd who builds bridges between storytelling and strategy. I ensure every brand is not only designed beautifully, but told with heart, depth, and authenticity.
Alongside my day job at Fun Love Media, I built me own artistic practice, @megancreatesart, where I specialize in handcrafted wood-burning (pyrography), painted pop artwork, and custom pet portraits.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Ooof. Getting down to the tough questions right off the bat! I’ve paid my therapist good money to answer this one, so here goes:
There was a time in my life where having a hard shell meant survival. It meant making myself as small as possible as to not burden anyone. My go-to is to push down my feelings and instead prioritize others comfort and needs. In that way, I thought, I’m valuable and worthy.
Well … I’m letting that sh*t go.
Now, I prioritize vulnerability, authenticity, and courage. From asking for help to unmasking my emotions, my purpose is to honor myself and my goals in real time.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
So funny that you ask this because I actually keep a photo of myself at age 6 on my work desk. I think of her as my intuition, and constantly consider how to honor and align with her sweet heart.
I would say, “Hey, Little Megan. You are SO wanted in this world. Your intellect, silliness, and BIG feelings are cornerstones of who you are which is a wonderful, fun, kind human. Don’t listen to anyone or anything else that tries to convince you otherwise. They’re absolutely wrong.”
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Whether you’re an artist or a business owner, I think the lie we tell ourselves is that you have to be “ready” to begin. You say that everything must be perfectly prepared or curated. The truth is that more authentic you are, the better the outcome. It’s hard. It’s messy. Just start.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I think I will really regret not going after SOMETHING in the world of comedy. Maybe comedy sketch writing. Stand up, perhaps. It’s been a pipe dream of mine for ages and I’d love to get to a point in my life where I’ve at least given it a shot.
