Story & Lesson Highlights with Ebony Jackson of Kansas City

We recently had the chance to connect with Ebony Jackson and have shared our conversation below.

Ebony , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Pilates. I just started and I have fallen in love with the idea of a new way of fitness. Pilates for me is challenging, fun, and humbling. It allows you to grow in your strength.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all!! I am Ebony Renee. I am from Kansas City, KS! I am a Wyandotte girl. I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. These past three years I have had the honor of caregiving for my mom full-time. She is a stroke survivor and my super hero!!! I am a makeup artist in Kansas. I love emphasizing my clients beautiful features. I enjoy being creative and allowing myself to explore different avenues. My love for makeup started in undergrad. I started watching YouTube specifically makeupD0ll. In my eyes she was the epitome of representation. I struggled with acne and scarring, and I came across makeupD0ll and she taught me how to cover my hyperpigmentation. That set the tone for me, because I was so insecure with my acne and hyperpigmentation. I thank God for Black Women having representation and knowing they are not alone in any thing they may be struggling with.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I always KNEW I was going to be a star. I know it may sound cliche but it’s true. As a child I would sing at family gatherings. I loved attention. I remember my late uncle telling me that he always saw me on a billboard with shining lights. I always claimed that for my life. I knew then that my purpose was to bring joy and experience to other people’s lives. How people learn from me I learn from people. It’s always been IN me and not on me. I manifested at an early age that I was gone retire my mom and be on a TV sharing my story with millions of people.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Babygirl, you got this! Never let anyone dim your light or try to take your voice. You have all the tools you need to succeed. I love you.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. Everyone I meet gets the same version of me. I don’t know how to not be myself. I tend to draw a lot of people to me. I’ve been told it’s my aura. I am authentically me, funny, loud (at times), reserved (when need), loving, kind and compassionate. What you get is what you get.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m doing makeup and not working an actual 9-5 job. Also when I have a slow morning and can sleep in lol.
