Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jennifer Starr of Olathe KS

We recently had the chance to connect with Jennifer Starr and have shared our conversation below.

Jennifer, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that because I work remotely, from home, and on my own schedule—it must not be “real work.” But in reality, digital marketing, social media consulting, and photography are incredibly dynamic, fast-paced, and strategy-driven industries. Just because I’m not commuting to a traditional office doesn’t mean I’m not working full-time (and then some!).

Running a business like this requires constant creativity, adapting to trends, meeting client deadlines, and staying ahead of ever-changing algorithms and platforms. The flexibility is a huge perk, especially as a parent—it allows me to be present for school events or take my kids to appointments—but make no mistake, it’s a full workload behind the scenes. The freedom just means I’m in control of how and when I get things done, not that I’m doing less.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a certified expert, I’m your gal for all things digital! From content creation to paid social management, I can guide your brand on the right path for successful lead generation and improved engagement.

Starr Creative Solutions, LLC offers a variety of marketing services, including photography, social strategy, copywriting, content creation and digital marketing consulting.

I have a deep-rooted history in the marketing industry, leading social strategies and media campaigns for a variety of healthcare, higher education and pet industry clients.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One moment that stands out is winning the Dog Writers Association of America Junior Writer Award—not just once, but twice. (1995 and 1997) Both awards were for heartfelt stories I wrote about my childhood dog, and I still remember the feeling of being seen and validated for something that came from such a personal place.

Those moments were so much more than just medals. They showed me the power of storytelling, especially when it’s rooted in real emotion and connection—two things that still guide my work today. Looking back, it’s no surprise that I built a career around creativity, communication, and animals. Whether I’m helping a brand tell their story online or capturing a pet’s personality through photography, I always come back to that same passion that started with a girl, her dog, and a story worth sharing.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Definitely. There was a point where I was juggling a full-time 9-to-5 career, raising young kids, and trying to keep up with everything in between—and it was a lot. I was exhausted, constantly stretched thin, and felt like I was always falling short somewhere. It would’ve been easy to walk away from my creative work just to make life feel a little simpler.

But what kept me going was the reminder that this business—the freedom to create, connect with others, and work with animals—is what lights me up. The flexibility to build a career on my terms, one that allows me to be there for my husband and children and do what I love, made the hard seasons worth pushing through.

It’s not always easy, but I wouldn’t trade the balance I have now for anything.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
My Going with Grace division is something I’m deeply committed to, and I truly believe it’s one of the most meaningful parts of my work. Photographing senior and critically ill pets isn’t always easy, but it’s an incredible honor to capture the love between a pet and their family—especially in those final days.

I often spend hours editing these images, making sure every detail is just right. It’s not just about retouching a photo—it’s about creating something that brings comfort, healing, and a lasting memory for families after their beloved pet has passed.

No matter how long it takes or how emotionally heavy it can be, I’ll never stop doing this work. Every pet deserves to be remembered with love and dignity, and I feel truly grateful to help preserve those final, tender moments.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who led with empathy and had a deep love for all creatures—big or small, furry or winged. I’ve always believed that every life matters, whether it’s a senior dog nearing the end of their journey, a wild deer mouse in need of rescue, or even an injured moth I carefully nurtured back to health.

I never saw those moments as small or silly—they were instinctive acts of compassion. I hope the story people tell is that I cared deeply, that I showed up for both people and animals with gentleness and heart, and that I made the world a little softer and kinder in the process.

“All creatures matter”—that’s always been my truth, and I hope it lives on through the work I’ve done and the way I’ve treated others.
