We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tiffany Trejo. Check out our conversation below.
Tiffany, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently re-launched my candle business after closing it down over 1.5 years ago. After I found out we were adding another little girl to the family, I could not imagine balancing running a business so I made the hard decision to close. This year I had an inkling about maybe making candles again just for myself, however I received so many messages from past customers letting me know that if I made candles again, they would be ready to buy. I chose to launch for fall and it has been a challenge to balance being a mom and a business owner but I am so proud of myself for doing both. My customers are amazing and it’s fun involving my girls in the process.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tiffany Trejo, I am owner of Black Label Candle Company. I started BLCC back in 2019 to help fund my thesis and then pay off my student loans which happened in 2022. We specialize in handcrafted nontoxic soy candles that are luxurious and high quality without the luxury price tag. I recently just re-opened my business and it’s been fun to reconnect with customers.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Probably my father, he has owned his own business basically my whole entire life and it’s not a 9-5 schedule. Therefore I saw him work hard at all hours of the day to keep his customers happy, provide the best service and be there when they needed him most.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that it is okay to be who you are, outspoken yet sensitive. Bold yet timid at times. It is okay to feel like the odd one out sometimes because that will lead you to building a life that others rarely make it to. Most of all, be proud of yourself for all that you have overcome.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That mainstream candles are nontoxic because they add a tiny bit of soy wax or use essential oils.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Well this is a fun one since I just re-opened after 1.5 years closed, they would miss me 🙂 JK but really.. they missed our candles because they are high quality and made with care, love and attention. I guess the fact that I am the one making them also helps.
