Eric Phillips DC of Overland Park on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Eric Phillips DC and have shared our conversation below.

Eric, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: When was the last time you felt true joy?
I love this question. I think many people confuse happiness and joy. Happiness is based upon what is currently happening – if good things are happening, I am happy. If bad things are happening, I’m not happy.

But practicing joy, we are able to find a feeling of gratitude and positivity in the moment no matter what. It’s a deep sense of satisfaction and conviction knowing life is a journey and is as long as we stick to our unwavering morals and principles, there is much to be blessed with.

I even have a “find joy” tattoo in my grandmothers handwriting on my wrist to remind me of the joyous things that occur to us every day and that sometimes, even when it is dark, we can FIND joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
First, I am a husband and father, I am a son to wonderful parents, sibling to two great sisters and a friend to those I am blessed to call my friends. I also just so happen to own a chiropractic clinic, Identity Chiropractic and training facility, Everyday Athlete Health Club.

I love health, especially fitness. So much so it became a detriment to my own health. I pushed and I pushed to be the biggest and strongest version of myself, often neglecting other very important aspects of health – including nutritional, emotional and spiritual. A car can only run on four wheels – running on one is not advised as you are sure to crash. In the last five years, I have had to rebuild my mind, body and spirit. It has taken effort, but a worthwhile one. I have felt better in the last six months than I have in the last 10 years.

Our clinic is focused on long-term health benefits in the four facets of health: Mechanical, emotional, nutritional and the psychospiritual. We understand how life affects all systems of our health and are dedicated to helping our clients navigate the complexities in a holistic way. We have an amazing treatment facility and even have a full gym connected to our clinic.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My wife. She has always believed in me, supported my vision and dreamt bigger for me than I even did. No idea is too big. No goal is out of reach. When I feel unsure, she reminds me that I am capable.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It will all work out. Life is going to flow how it does, good and bad, happiness and sorrow. We can apply force to the river and make changes, but those changes will come over time, often in years and decades – so just let it all work out. This isn’t to say we shouldn’t work hard. We should find our own balance of work and play and pursue our own personal legend with no regret and full of intention.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
My choices today shape the father, partner, leader, and human I become tomorrow.
I am here to live fully. To feel, live, love and give intentionally.

I refuse to settle for a life lived on autopilot.
I choose to live with intention, build with purpose, and love with my whole heart.

The best return on investment is found in time spent with those I love.
My family is not just my “why.”
They are my who.
They are the reason I move, grow, build, and keep going—no matter how hard it gets.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Simple. He was committed to his family. He didn’t put them second to success.
They were success. You could see it in the way he looked at his wife. In the way he played with his kids. In the way he protected their time, their rhythm, their joy.
