Story & Lesson Highlights with Nicole Alicia

We recently had the chance to connect with Nicole Alicia and have shared our conversation below.

Nicole, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day I get up and make coffee first. I wait at my kitchen table for the pot to finish. Often time if I have time before I have to help my son get ready for school, I’ll pull out my journal and jot down some thoughts and feelings for the morning while sipping my coffee. Sometimes I have time to read my Bible or Devotional for about 10 or 20 minutes before I get dressed and start my day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Nicole Alicia, I am a writer / vintage shop owner, that writes fiction novels, short-stories and non-fiction. I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri (Go Chiefs!) and I still live in the Kansas City area with my Husband, Son and dog Nya. I have published one Novel so far called “Drama University”. I also have a blog called “Pages, Places and Purpose” where I write about Black History, Geneaology, Books, my writing journey and my own Entrepreneurial journey. Currently I am working on a Memoir of short stories based on my experiences growing up in South Kansas City in the late 80’s and 90’s. My writing can be loosely described comical, entertaining and down – to – earth.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve learned the most about work from fellow writers who’ve shared their process. They’ve shown me that discipline, consistency and curiosity are just as important as inspiration.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was sad or scared as a child I had two special stuffed animals that helped me. One was a white Lamb that was given to me by my Great-Grandma and the other was a Teddy Bear, I think my Parents bought for me. I took these two stuffed animals with me everywhere almost. Whether it was to my Grandma’s house to spend the night or to sleep over at a friends. I was not one bit embarrassed about them. Some kids have blankets or suck their thumbs, I had Lilly and Teddy. They were my comfort items. And shamelessly I took them to College with me first semester as well.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to being a writer that doesn’t just write stories for sheer entertainment always, but I like to have a message or part that may help someone. Or at least share maybe something new that my readers may not have known before. I feel like I have been given a gift to be able to use words in a particular way to be a good story teller. Books and writing, words leave a lasting effect and a legacy that lives on longer than a person. I love that aspect about writing.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Wasting time on social media, watching tv, chores constantly, being worried, being mad. Just unproductive things and thinking.
