We recently had the chance to connect with Devonn Ritchie and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Devonn, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me is a blend of business, homeschooling, wellness, and family. My mornings usually start with my kids — cartoons, breakfast, and then diving into our homeschool routine. Once lessons are wrapped up, I switch into CEO mode, whether that’s designing new collections, connecting with my community online, or strategizing the next big move for Health X Fitness. I make sure to carve out time for movement and fueling my body, because the way I take care of myself directly impacts how I show up for my family and my business. Evenings are family-focused, but once the house quiets down, I often circle back to ideas or planning — it’s when some of my best creativity flows. No two days are exactly the same, but the throughline is always purpose: pouring into my family while building something bigger than myself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I launched Health X Fitness with a vision to create more than clothing — I wanted to build a brand that empowers women to feel confident, strong, and unapologetic in every part of their lives. What makes HXF unique is that it’s not just about activewear, it’s about lifestyle. From seamless contour sets designed to flatter every body type, to community-driven events that connect women in Kansas City and beyond, the brand is rooted in both luxury and purpose. For me, it’s about showing women that you don’t have to shrink yourself to fit in — you can own your strength, your style, and your story. That’s the heart of HXF, and why it matters. Next we are launching our men’s line in October, I have plans for a huge event so the community can get their hands on it before it hits the site.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who to be, I was a broke single mom — overweight, exhausted, and miserable. I was stuck in a cycle of following rules that didn’t make sense, trying to live a version of ‘normal’ that left me unfulfilled. One day I realized I’d had enough. I didn’t know who wrote these rules or why we were all following them, but I knew I wasn’t going to anymore. I chose to carve my own path — not just for me, but to show others there’s so much more to life than waking up, going to work, and repeating the cycle. We’re meant to actually live, to dream, to build, to create. That’s what drives me now: inspiring others to break free and chase the life they’ve always wanted.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Some of the defining wounds of my life have been single motherhood and surviving an abusive relationship. Those experiences could have broken me, but instead they became the turning point. I realized that I get to decide how my story plays out — not my circumstances, not my past. What I’ve learned is that the real difference between someone who succeeds and someone who doesn’t is consistency and the courage to keep showing up. And the only way to truly fail is to quit. Those lessons came from pain, but they’ve shaped the resilience and drive I carry today.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I think a lot of smart people are getting it wrong by believing they have to do it all themselves. Just because you can do it all doesn’t mean you should. Success isn’t about burning out trying to juggle everything — it’s about surrounding yourself with people who support you, share the vision, and lift you higher. The smartest move you can make isn’t proving you can do it alone, it’s building a team and community that makes the journey sustainable and meaningful.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I was a little delusional — in the best way — because I went after exactly what I wanted in life. That I set a new standard for myself, my kids, and for women everywhere. More than anything, I hope they say I built a community that was powerful because it helped women step into their power. Have you ever met a woman who truly knows what she’s capable of? Now imagine that multiplied into an entire community. That’s the legacy I want to leave behind.
