An Inspired Chat with Clay Morgan of Midtown

We recently had the chance to connect with Clay Morgan and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Clay, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Oh I laugh all the time. It’s in my DNA to find humor in every stituation. I am very proud of my daughters! Recently, my oldest moved to a full time position at a Med Spa doing laser facials. I am so happy for her! My youngest leaves for school at the end of the month, and I can’t believe both are chasing their dreams.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Clay Morgan and I have been performing improv comedy since 1997. I started teaching improv classes around 2001 and love how the concepts of listening, agreeing, and working together translate to office culture.
At Breaking the Script, I have a team of seasoned improvisers that all believe that great communication is the key to effective teams.

We can work with a team from almost any industry, create a curriculum for that group, and execute a workshop series that will ultimately generate better communication, team bonds, and overall better ideas.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
There is a moment I distinctly remember. I was the MC of a stage variety show for a little while. One of the dancers and I were talking about the company owner. She said she had a lot of respect and admiration for the owner because, “She makes things happen.”

That resonated. I wanted to be the kind of person to make things happen. To that point, I had been living under the false notion that I couldn’t carve a path. I started sharpening my chisel and started carving a path.

I still revisit that idea. I will make things happen!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I suffer impostor syndrom at times. I know what skills I have, I know the concepts I teach inside and out. I know how to put a show together and perform.

BUT… there are so many people who have taken more classes, have different philosophies, have more experience, have worked with international instructors… see the doubt creeps in.

I have to remind myself that those same people that I share any stage or workshop with, are just people and we are working towards the same thing: To make people’s lives better through improv comedy.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Pretty much. I did a lot of soul searching and therapy and found out more of who I am. I am happiest being creative and learning something new.

If you meet me in person, there is a surface level persona. A best foot forward kind of thing. But, I am really curious about people. So, my interest in a stranger is genuine! I also look for ways to connect a little deeper.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I did a “white-stone ceremony” at a meditation workshop in my twenties. The intent was to reveal something about the self. You work through a guided meditation and select a white stone. As the meditation progresses, a word is revealed and that word is a revelation of your true nature.

The word that I could not get out of my mind’s eye was “creator” and so I wrote it on that stone. So, I guess, I am doing what I was born to do. Make it happen. Create. Create opportunities, art, theater, businesses. I am at my best when I have freedom to create.
