An Inspired Chat with Samuel Villezcas of Downtown Kansas City

We recently had the chance to connect with Samuel Villezcas and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Samuel, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I feel like everyone is just struggling with life right now, A lot is going on in the world, friendships, family, friends. Everyone is divided right now; it’s like everyone is doing their best just to survive. The world is upside down right now; I believe some kindness and understanding can go along way if we all just actually listen to each other and talk.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! Thank you for having me again, it’s such a pleasure. My name is Samuel (Sammie) as some know me. I am a street photographer from here in Kansas City. I enjoy documenting City life here in KC and showing off the people of KC as well. I have been photographing KC here for the last 5 years under my name SammieMedia_ and it has been such a fun and exciting journey so far. I feel as what makes my photography unique is just my style of shooting in general. I enjoy making my subject the main character of a movie in my photos as well as incorporating fashion into my photos. helps keep the subject interesting!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Definitely my Parents! I owe so much to them, they had nothing growing up but did everything they could to give us 3 a better life. I was an only child growing and i always remember my dad working various multiple jobs and my mother working as well while still taking care of me and the house in order. I learned very quick to appreciate the things you have not everyone us so fortunate or blessed financially. I learned you have to work extra hard for all the things you want and its after that you can truly appreciate owning the things you do.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I think about giving up all the time, fortunately my mind is wired like that and I’m too stubborn to ever admit it. Society has a way of making us feel like we are never good enough. Constantly struggling with self-doubt and feeling like at a certain age we should be a lot further in life. Seeing other do good and prospering can really mess with your mind and make you feel like what are you doing wrong in life. it takes a lot of discipline to pull yourself out of a hole and find a way to make things work out in your favor, Although I believe it’s a sad truth that a person doesn’t always get their happy ending. Fortunately, life isn’t a movie, and the good guy doesn’t always win. 2 things in life I have learned and holds true are: 1 you don’t get to the top by being nice and 2 nice people finish last.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
“Show me your friends and I will show you your future.”

I truly believe this and holds a lot of truth. Although our choices, our decisions are always on us as individuals. I do believe positive or negative influence has a lot to do with how people are shaped growing up and the influences they have a re determining factor in people lives. We have to be very careful with the people we let into our circle. Not everyone is your friend and not everyone wants to see you succeed either.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely, that is what discipline is, not complaining and doing what needs to be done regardless of if we feel like it or not. You should always do everything to the best of your ability, if not. Then there’s no point in doing then.
