We’re looking forward to introducing you to Daisha Maria-Breona . Check out our conversation below.
Daisha , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I believe I am chasing my purpose. Although I’m not exactly sure where that’s taking me, I’m trusting God in the process until I reach what He has planned. If I stopped, I would feel lost and reliant on the uncertainty of self
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m originally from Jersey City, NJ and now I’m creating in Kansas City, I once dreamed of being an author, dancer, or fashion designer, but chose a more stable path—earning degrees in Communications and Executive Leadership. In 2021, after a mental breakdown later diagnosed as bipolar disorder, painting became my way to survive. What began as expression grew into a committed practice, and by 2023 I was showing my work publicly.
My portraits and florals reflect cultural identity, emotion, and self-love while exploring themes of mental health, resilience, and faith. Painting has become my language—color, shape, and symbol carrying what words cannot.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was someone who thought success and happiness was based on achievement. I was committed to a path of the corporate world — degrees, strong suits, an assistant, office, etc. You know, the romantic parts of “success”. Now I believe success is based on purpose. The only way to find your purpose is to figure out who you are, and walk one step at a time in your journey. If morally good things come about, you’re walking in that. I’m not sure where God taking me as an artist, but by owning my genuine self I found my creativity and I know this involves my purpose.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
In 2021, I went through my first breakdown and finally saw how much trauma I’d been carrying—from childhood into adulthood. That episode showed me I couldn’t keep running from pain; I had to face it and accept it as part of my journey. That’s when I started painting. It became my journal, a way to process through color and symbolism. Painting has helped me heal, and in sharing it, I’ve been able to inspire others in their healing too.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
I love God. I don’t aim to preach, but I want Him to use me through purpose. It’s not about boasting—it’s about witnessing His power. He keeps me grounded, aligned, and focused on a plan greater than myself. I’m just grateful to be a vessel.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop comparing myself to others, living in fear, and defining success as achievement rather than fulfilling purpose.
