Exploring Life & Business with Triny Beckman of Capital Gymnastics & Athletics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Triny Beckman.

Hi Triny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a gymnast. I grew up identifying with the qualities that make a serious competitor. Mental toughness, physical strength, flexibility, fearlessness, the ability to put aside the rest of your day and really zone in on practice.
Today, I use those same qualities to run a successful business. I put all of my energy and effort into the athletes during practice and I put all of my energy and effort into the business when I’m not coaching. It’s where my passion is. It’s what I live to do. I would choose coaching over and over again as difficult as it is. I have a vision, a purpose, a feeling that I want to share with our community. Accountability, responsibility, time management, goal setting, facing fears and kicking them into the dust. If I can do it. You can do it.
After starting in Topeka in 1999 as a coach and gym manager, now I have 26+ years of coaching, mentoring and training young athletes and coaches. I absolutely love what I do

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is smooth. We out grew our original location, started a satellite location, our grew our original location again and finally moved in the Fall of 2019. In the meantime, I had to ask 2 long term coaches to move on because it wasn’t working out. They left and took athletes and other coaches with them causing me to take a long hard look at our values and what is really important to us as a business.
Covid hit a few months after we moved into our new building and I thought we were done for. My staff and partner rallied around me and we kept going with online classes and small groups as allowed.
Thankfully, wd have a community that believes in us and we persevered. It took years to recover our pre-covid numbers, though.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our program is centered around the 3 and 4 year old children who’s parents need a healthy outlet for them to learn playground readiness, basic social interaction behaviors, listening to an adult that isn’t their parent as well as some gymnastics skills, balance, coordination, overcoming challenges and working together with classmates/ friends.
Sure, we have a successful competitive program and usually will see our athletes on college rosters soon enough, but it6the little ones that we love.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am proud to live in Topeka. I grew up in the Blue Valley School District and have a great amount of respect for that area as well.
