Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Eve Cosplay.
Hi Cynthia Eve, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My cosplay journey began in 2017 at a small library convention in Springfield, MO. I’d only heard bits and pieces about cosplay before, but I was excited to see what it was all about. Even though the convention was small, the energy and enthusiasm of the community made it feel alive. I met so many new friends that day and got to nerd out over books and movies we all loved. That experience completely hooked me and I knew from that day on I wanted to dive deeper into cosplay.
From 2017 to 2020, I attended local conventions here and there, usually wearing my Halloween costume or something my parents had gifted me. It wasn’t until Christmas 2021, when I got my first sewing machine from my family, that things really took off. I started collecting fabric from thrift stores and made regular trips to Joann’s to explore all the fun bits and bobs.
My first handmade cosplay was She-Ra from the Netflix series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. At the time, I thought I nailed it, but looking back, I can definitely see where I cut corners. Like anything creative, cosplay is a learning journey, and I’m proud of how much I’ve grown since then.
After that, I kept learning as much as I could and began sharing what I knew on social media. One of my favorite parts of cosplay is being able to pass on the knowledge I’ve gathered and help someone new get started. Where I am today is the result of years of learning from others in this amazing community, and giving myself the time and patience to start new projects, make mistakes, and grow, not just as a cosplayer, but as a person.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, my cosplay journey has been a really fun and rewarding experience. That said, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is being my own toughest critic. Since I make most of what I wear, it’s easy to get caught up in the details and be hard on myself, especially when working on big projects.
Over time, I’ve learned the importance of not rushing and avoiding shortcuts. When I do, things usually don’t turn out the way I envisioned, which can be frustrating. Taking my time and being patient with the process has made a huge difference.
Thankfully, the cosplay community is incredibly supportive. It’s full of kind, uplifting people who are always ready to cheer you on when you’re feeling stuck. Whenever I’m being too hard on myself, I know I can send a photo of my progress to a few friends and get the encouragement I need to keep going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Whenever someone asks me, “What’s your favorite cosplay?” I always say it’s like trying to pick a favorite child. Each one holds a special place in my heart, they’ve all taken time, effort, and have been part of different phases of my life. It’s hard to compare them when I’ve poured so much into each one.
If I had to choose the one I worked hardest on, it would be my Princess Peach cosplay from Super Mario. That project was a true labor of love and resilience, taking about a year to complete on and off. Along the way, I picked up several new skills like hand-beading appliqué, 3D printing, resin casting, and wig styling. It was also the cosplay that helped me gain some online recognition—several videos featuring Princess Peach went viral in 2024. She’s a character that a lot of people adore, and I think my interpretation really resonated with the community.
Outside of Peach, a few other cosplays stand out. My Sophie Hatter cosplay from Howls Moving Castle is one I’m especially proud of because it was made entirely from thrifted and secondhand materials. My Jude Duarte cosplay from The Cruel Prince challenged me with the most complex wig styling I’ve ever done, and I love how it turned out. And my Barbie cosplay from 12 Dancing Princesses was a milestone, it was the first time I was sponsored by a fabric company, which made bringing such a beloved childhood character to life even more meaningful.
Each project has taught me something new and helped me grow, not just as a cosplayer, but as a creator. They’re all part of my journey, and I wouldn’t trade any of them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe luck has played much of a role in my cosplay journey. Every project I’ve completed is the result of years of learning, dedication, and hard work. And when it comes to the opportunities I’ve been given, I give full credit to God.
One verse I live by is Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ, who strengtheneth me.”
This verse reminds me that even in moments of doubt or difficulty, I can find strength through the Lord. Over the past few years, He has opened so many doors, allowing me to share both my work and my faith with others in this incredible community.
I’m also incredibly grateful for the amazing support system I have around me. My wonderful parents, amazing boyfriend, and other friends and family that have been there every step of the way, cheering me on, helping me through challenges, and celebrating every win. Their encouragement has meant the world to me and has helped me grow not just as a cosplayer, but as a person.
I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without God’s plan guiding my life each day, and the love and support of the people around me. I’m forever thankful for the opportunities He’s provided and the incredible friendships I’ve built through this hobby. Some of my closest friends came into my life because of cosplay and the way this community brings people together. Cosplay has completely changed my life and I will forever be grateful for it.
